I lived 2 door down the hall from John 1965-1966 at Emory at Oxford. He was a very kind person, who cared about others.

Jimmy Suber
July 23, 2022
Johnny was a close friend from 1st grade in Perry to somewhere in college in Atlanta. Our families often celebrated Thanksgiving together. His mother, Ann, and my mother, Marjorie, were best friends. Our fathers, John Sr., and Bill Suber, often hunted together. The Houser family treated me as one of their own. The obituary omitted a part of Johnny and his family heritage I think is important for all to know about: That is, Johnny was an ordnance specialist for the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era and he was in Vietnam, albeit not in combat, per se. His father was a World War II pilot in the South Pacific, driving converted B-25 medium bombers as gunships, outfitted with as many as 10 fifty-caliber machine guns. Johnny's great uncle was Courtney Hodges, the only four-star general in World War II not to attend West Point. More importantly, he was also from Perry, Ga., and he was commander of the First Army which captured more territory in its push into Germany after the Normandy invasion and the ensuing Bulge battle than any other Allied army, including the famous Patton's outfit. They were all three stalwart American armed servicemen, and all three hunters, providers and just good men. And Johnny soldiered on through some difficult times, keeping his deep faith in God and trying to help his nation's environment and its citizens' understandings of nature. It is a deep and breathtaking honor to have been his and his family's friend.
