Mrs. Capshaw and Family,

Please accept my apologies for my late, but heartfelt condolences on the passing of Lee. It was quite a "shock" to open up the local paper recently to read that your loved one had gone to their final rest.

I considered Lee a first rate professional and dear friend! I worked with him from my retirement in the Air Force in Jun 98 until I left the U-2 Program in Dec 06. He was one of the first I met when I went to work in the program and one of the last to whom I said goodbye when I left.

I know it's probably been said already by many others, but he was truly a man of honor and integrity. As a new Air Force Retiree going into a new program as well, for which I knew very little about, except what I knew being a First Sergeant in the 78th MSS, Lee made me welcome. More importantly, he always showed me respect, made me feel at home, and always had a kind word for me and all those he came in contact. He truly cared about those around him, and “Mankind” period! While he came across with that "gruff" exterior at times; I knew it was mostly show as there were times he and I had conversations and through his interactions with others, that luster from that “heart of gold" was ever present.

His wit was uncanny and reminded me a lot of my late father, who too, was raised in the “holler”, not in Tennessee, but just on the other side of Kingsport, TN in a little Southwest Virginia town called Appalachia. I could listen to Lee’s stories, seems like forever.

Yes, indeed we will miss him, but as sure as I know my name, I’m certain we will see Lee again. And then, we’ll have all the time for eternity to tell and listen to all the stories we want.

In the difficult days ahead, may the Heavenly Father give you the strength to endure this hard time in your lives and know that Lee now goes before to help prepare a place for each of us one day to come? May God give you comfort and bless each and every one of you. Thank you so much for sharing Lee with us!

In Christ’s Name Always,
SMSgt (Ret) Bob Swecker and Family

Jackie,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time. Laura and I were very surprised at the news. Laura talks about what a real nice man he was when she was growing up over with your family. If there is anything I can do for you, please let me know.
