Marshall Helms Obituary

Marshall Leo Helms, Jr.
August 24, 2022
Macon, Georgia - Marshall Leo Helms, Jr., died on August 24, 2022 in Macon, Georgia, having suffered from Parkinson's disease. Born in 1935 in Buena Vista, Georgia, to Marshall Leo Helms and Evelyn Guy Helms, Marshall grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, where he was known as "Sonny." He graduated from Valdosta High School where he played on the basketball team and served as co-manager to the storied Valdosta High School Wildcat football team, which won the State Championship and the "Peanut Bowl" during his senior year.
Marshall graduated from Georgia Tech in 1959 with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was then employed as a professional engineer at both Pan American and Delta Airlines, which allowed him to travel widely. He enjoyed bringing his parents along on adventures to Europe and South America. Marshall later attended law school at Emory University, graduating in 1966. At Emory, he met and married his wife, Chris, with whom he later opened a private law practice, Helms & Helms, in Douglas County. During his 40-year legal career, Marshall was recognized for his volunteer work and ran for statewide office. He was a lifelong fisherman and in retirement returned often to south Georgia to his favorite lakes. He also enjoyed watching his grandsons' little league baseball games, while eating boiled peanuts and sitting in his favorite lawn chair.
Marshall was preceded in death by his sister, Laurel Guy Helms; and his son, Mark Helms. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Christine Helms; daughter, Tena Helms (Norm Pearson); grandsons, George and Harry Pearson of Macon; grandsons, Fox and Shafer Helms and their mother, Cindy Helms of Denver, Colorado; dear sisters, Lucille Converse (George) and Lizzie Barton (Bob), and nine nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful to the staff of Zebulon Park Health & Rehabilitation for the loving care shown to Marshall. In accordance with Marshall's wishes, there will be no Memorial Service. Instead, his ashes will be scattered at his favorite fishing hole.
