Ruby Sulton Obituary

Ruby Clowers Sulton
Mar 23, 1925 - Sep 26, 2014
Atlanta, GA- Ruby C. Sulton, 89, of Clifton Road, N.E., died Friday, September 26, 2014, at an Atlanta area nursing home. Memorial services will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina with interment at Orangeburg Cemetery.
Ruby Clowers Sulton, a native of Georgia who was a social worker and educator at the secondary and post-secondary levels in South Carolina, was the only daughter of Washington and Mary Clowers. Ruby was born on March 23, 1925, in Macon, Georgia, where she attended Ballard High School. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia State University and a Master of Social Work degree from Atlanta University (AU). While at AU, she met her future husband, James E. Sulton, then a student at Morehouse College. She moved with him to Orangeburg, South Carolina. They raised five children together and were married for sixty-one years.
Ruby C. Sulton began her professional career as a social worker and high school educator, but interrupted it to devote herself to raising a family. She was a Roman Catholic who belonged first to Christ the King and later to Holy Trinity Church in Orangeburg. Her belief in knowledge as a life changing force was infectious. She remained passionate about the value of education, insisted upon it for her own children and sought to share it with as many others as possible. A former President of the National Association of Black Social Workers, she was active in that organization.
Mrs. Sulton remained perpetually proud of her upbringing. She cherished many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews whose ancestral home lay in the small town of Gray, Georgia. They collectively raised and nurtured her, sustaining her with their love until her death.
Mrs. Sulton was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Sulton Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia G. Sulton and sons, James E Sulton Jr. (Anne T. Sulton), Francis A. Sulton (Jacqueline R. Sulton), Charles C. Sulton (Louise W. Sulton), and Thomas R. Sulton (Janet Sulton).. Her grandchildren are Susan Jackson, Carmen, Jonathan, James, William, Patrice, Aaron, Joseph and Jacob Sulton. Great grandchildren are Ana Theresa Villavasso, Sara Jacqueline Villavasso, Rachel Denease Villavasso, James E. Sulton, IV, Ava Ruby Sulton, Mayrin Jami Reyes Jackson, Amira Margaret Sulton and Leila Anne Sulton. In addition, she enjoyed the love and support of many loving friends and relatives throughout her nine interesting and eventful decades.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Post Office Box, 11454, Alexandria, Virginia, 22312.

Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise,
