Gary Sharpe Obituary
February 26, 1950 - January 14, 2025
SUN PRAIRIE - Gary Robert Sharpe, age 74, passed away on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. He was born on February 26, 1950, and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, the son of a bricklayer, George R. Sharpe, and "the best American cook he ever knew," Marjorie Lenore Sharpe (née Williams). He is survived by two wonderful daughters, Tori and Kailey; his brother, Brian (Linda) and nephew, Mason; girlfriend, Becky; best friend, Kevin (Liz); and many extraordinary friends, golf buddies, and fellow pub-trivia players. After graduating from Youngstown South in 1968, Gary attended M.I.T., Kent State University, and UW-Madison before finding his calling in Information Technology at Great Lakes Higher Education. Before that, Gary worked as a bartender for many years at Genna's Lounge in Madison, where he also played third base for Genna's softball team. Gary's knowledge of sports was extensive, and he was an enthusiastic fan, especially as a season seatholder of the Milwaukee Brewers, but also as a fan of the Packers and the Badgers. He still hopes the Brewers will have their World Series championship season. Gary also had a deep love of rock and roll, from Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, and Roger McGuinn to Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris, to name just a few. The Grateful Dead, though, were "the greatest rock-and-roll band in the history of the world," and Gary heard them perform live-while Jerry Garcia was still alive-17 times! Gary's knowledge and interests were wide-ranging. He made a fantastic apple pie, studied American history, and travelled throughout the U.S. and to Hong Kong, China, and Central Europe. Many will miss Gary's companionship, his wry sense of humor, and lively discussions of all kinds with him. We hope he rests well.
