Janice Whitcher Obituary

Janice "Jan" Whitcher

May 4, 1941 - February 27, 2025

Sun Prairie - Janice "Jan" Whitcher, age 83, of Sun Prairie, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge. She was born on May 4, 1941, in Darlington, the daughter of Harold and Phyllis (White) Steiner. She was united in marriage to Jerold "Jerry" Whitcher on October 1, 1966, at Fayette Methodist Church.

After graduating from Darlington High School in 1959, she worked a few years as a telephone operator with Monroe Telephone Company. Later she moved to Madison to attend Madison Business College and then found employment with the state of Wisconsin. She retired in 2000, after serving for over 30 years and was so honored that Governor Tommy Thompson signed her retirement certificate.

Jan was a faithful and very active long-time member of Bashford United Methodist Church prior to its closing. She loved baking cakes and taking pictures, she will be fondly remembered as the family photographer and organizing family reunions. Jan loved attending car shows with her husband, Jerry, and later dancing with her "fun-timers" group at the VFW. She enjoyed traveling, listening to classic old country music, and attending Green Bay Packers games.

Jan is survived by her sons, Timothy (Karen) Whitcher and Craig (Julie) Whitcher; grandchildren, David Whitcher, Ethan Whitcher, Ava Whitcher, and Isabelle Froh; sisters, Barb Ischi, Marjy (Terry) Crapp, and Carol (Don) Gaulrapp; sister-in-laws, Shirley Faherty, Jan (Dave) Biel, Sharon Steiner and Pat Steiner; and brother-in-law, Roger Sue. She is further survived by many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; brothers, Delbert, Duane, and Charlie Steiner; and sister, Nancy Pilling.

A funeral service will be held at Oakwood Village Prairie Ridge, 5565 Tancho Drive, Madison, at 10 a.m., on Friday, March 14, 2025, with the Rev. Wayne Shannon presiding. Burial will take place at Lima Union Cemetery, Lima, Wis., at 1:45 p.m., on Friday. A visitation will be held at Oakwood from 9 a.m., until the time of the service on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer's Association or Oakwood Foundation (Continuing Care Endowment Fund) would be appreciated by the family. Jan's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Oakwood Prairie Ridge and their hospice for all the kind and compassionate care they gave her. Jan was a neighbor and friend. Have many good memories of our times together. She loved her family dearly and often talked about the great times they had together.

"There is no one in this world like your mother. She was and always will be a beautiful light in the heart of those who know her."

Our Sympathy and Prayers are with Tim, Gregg and their families.

I am so sorry to hear of Jan´s passing. I worked with Jan for several years starting back in 1983. She was my supervisor when I was an LTE thru a class in High School. She was such a sweet, kind person who I truly enjoyed!
