Anthony Attardo Obituary

Anthony Attardo, 87
SCARBOROUGH – Anthony Attardo, 87, passed away on January 7, 2015. Born to Salvatore and Josephine (Terrasi) Attardo in Waltham Mass in1927 Anthony Francis Attardo was the fourth of six children. Anthony's parents emigrated from Sicily to America in the early 1900's to escape oppression and start a new life.
Growing up in Waltham during the height of the great depression instilled the values of hard work, resilience, and strong family ties. As a child he would deliver newspapers in the morning and on the way home from school fill his delivery bag with coal that fell from the rail cars. This helped heat the home. One of the jobs he had growing up was at a local camera store. He worked in the finishing lab developing film. This started his lifelong interest in the photography and the film processing business.
After graduating from Saint Charles High School in 1945, Anthony joined the army where he trained as a machine gunner in the infantry. A last minute change in his deployment diverted him from the Pacific campaign to Europe. Landing in Trieste the army discovered his photography skills and reassigned him to the Army Air Corp with the 15th Air Command. He served directly for the Embassy in Rome as a specialist for strategic aerial reconnaissance. He regularly flew into enemy territory gathering intelligence before and after bombing missions. Anthony was also assigned to provide photographic documentation of the execution of Benito Mussolini.

When Anthony returned from Europe he attended the Eastern School of Photography in Boston, MA. After graduating he took a position as vice president of Master Color of New England where he was able to continue his education through Eastman Kodak at Rochester Institute of Technology, and Boston University.

He married Muriel A. Stanley from Belmont MA in December of 1956. Soon after, he and his three brothers built a house in Wayland, MA where he and Muriel moved and started their family, having two sons, Anthony F. Attardo Jr. in 1958 and Paul C. Attardo in 1962.
The family moved to Scarborough, Maine in 1967 where Anthony teamed up with Edward (Ned) Harding to build a small local photofinishing business, Bicknell Photo, into one of the largest privately owned businesses of its kind with over 1,000 employees. After selling the business in 1988 to Konica, he and Ned remained close friends for the remainder of their lives. Anthony rejoined Konica in 2000 as Senior VP of Customer Relations until 2004 when he retired to attend to Muriel's health concerns.
Anthony learned early in life to remain humble and treat people with respect, dignity, and compassion. He believed in taking the time to listen to people and giving everyone the opportunity to succeed. Because of this he developed countless long lasting friendships through is life.
Community service was an important aspect of Anthony's life. He served as a trustee to the Scarborough Sanitary District for 15 years, was elected to the Scarborough Town Council and served on many community-based committees such as the Charter Review Committee and the Municipal Building committee. He also volunteered with United Way for many years. Additionally he was a member of the Congressional Meeting Club, the Executive Club of Portland, and the Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of directors for the Scarborough Chamber.
Anthony loved to cook, trained by his mother and father as a young boy in traditional Italian fare. He often used a wood burning cook-stove to prepare meals or make large pots of tomato sauce. He always maintained a vegetable garden, often with over 100 tomato plants. He and his family also foraged for wild mushrooms, a tradition that was passed down by his father. Nothing ever went to waste; all extras were given to friends and neighbors or preserved for the winter.
To his friends he was Tony; to his family he was Tee, uncle Tee, or dad. To everyone who knew him he was a friend, a confidant, and a mentor. The community he developed will be forever enriched because of him.
Anthony passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 7, 2015 but will continue to warm the hearts of all those who knew and remember him.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Muriel S. Attardo; his two sons Anthony F. Attardo Jr. and Paul C. Attardo; his brother and his wife Louis and Beatrice Attardo, his sister Madeline Randolph, his sister-in-law Anna Attardo; and many cousins, nieces and nephews as he is reunited with his brothers Frank and Joseph Attardo and his sister Rose Oliveo. Travel in peace.
Visiting hours are scheduled for Friday, January 16, 2014, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 US Rte. 1, Scarborough, ME. Little did I know Tony was more ill then he told me. I had known Tony since Bicknells on Free street where my father had a diner almost 50 yrs ago at the time
A wonderful man. I hope Tony, Dr Mazzone, Bart and my father are cooking some italian meals and having Italian debates over a glass of wine. Tony was not a good men he was a great man.

Famiglia Attardo,

Paul and Anthony and all of the Attardo Family,
I'm truly sorry for your loss. I enjoyed watching him mow his lawn on a big tractor smoking a cigar, quick to give me a wave, stop mowing, cross the street, to chat about life, what was going on that day small or big the world to the neighbor hood, we would always laugh , seemed like our chats were always with filled with little wisdom statements throughout the conversation and always had a great handshake to start and end our conversations , the conversations we had seemed to stew in reflection and resolve with laughter, always wishing each other well with what ever adventure life was throwing at us at that time. Thoughts are filled with tear jerks of loss while smiles spurred with found memories of a great friend and neighbor.

Tony's death leaves an enormous void in this world. He was a man of dignity and generosity. His unselfishness and ability to easily and naturally give to others is a model for all of us. I am grateful to him for assisting my newly divorced mother by hiring her and aiding her in finding help to maintain our old home a few houses away from his. Tony's smile was uplifting!

Dear Paul, we are saddened by the passing of your father who was an incredible man with endless faith and boundless energy when it came to helping others. He was of course my first employer (what was he thinking?) and always a strong presence when we were sowing our oats as teenagers. I will always remember how his eyes held his smile, and the kind energy he radiated. I see those qualities in you, and know you are forever blessed to have had such a rock to fall back upon as you were growing up. Driving by your childhood home always makes me feel rooted in community and family, I guess partly because your dad always made me feel like a part of your family, and his home was on the way when I would drive to my parent's house. Such a privilege and honor to have known him, and to still know him in you. Much love to you all during this difficult time.

What a loss to our community, but what a gentleman and businessman he was. Tony made many contributions by living his life with integrity and honor. I met Tony when I was 15 years old and Bicknell's Photo Service was downtown, near Middle St. He frequented my father's diner Rudy's Lunch. Always cheerful, and positive. He appreciated lived life the way it should be lived. When my father passed last August Tony was recovering in the Pine Point nursing home and as far as we know Tony was the last person to talk to my father. When we saw my father later that day he was semi-conscious and never spoke to anyone again. What sticks out in my mind is my father passed after 10 PM and I wanted to go tell Tony, but he was resting and I didn't want to wake him. Early the next day I went back to Pine Point and Tony was outside, sitting in the fresh air enjoying the sun. I approached him to share the news my father had passed Tony looked me square in the eye and said ”Tommy, Thank God” Tony was a friend of my father for almost 50 years and knew there was no need for him to fight anymore. Tony's words gave me comfort. That's the type of man I knew, he found good, when things didn't seem to feel so good. I so appreciate of his courage to share those words. It made my father's passing a bit easier to hear what his friend Tony said to me. Tony Attardo, was one of nicest men, I have had the pleasure to meet. God has three good friends now with Tony, Dr. Mazzone and my Father. On Behalf of my family, RIP Tony Attardo

Anthony Jr,

I am sorry to learn of your dad's passing. He was a remarkable person and apparently passed those attributes right along to you. Unfortunately we sometimes do not know how well a person lived life but your dad sure did. We share fond memories your parents loaning out the "barn" on numerous occasions during our high school years so that we could construct our projects and pranks. I was struck by the graciousness and their ability to simply trust us.

Anthony, it has been such a long time but know that your dad touched all of us in his unassuming way that made lasting impressions.

Tony came into my life in the early 1970s. My future wife worked for him at Bicknell's Photo Service and I was new in town, having just returned from my college graduation motorcycle adventure. Tony decided I needed monitoring more than I needed more adventure, so he made me an employee, also. He was very proud to have me leave his business to pursue more education and a profession, but he never let me too far out of his orbit. Having Tony remain my friend was one of the singular breaks of my life. Everyone wants and needs friends like Tony, always available and anxious to help. The hole he leaves is enormous and the best any of us can do is to resolve to pay it back by being a friend like Tony to someone who needs it.

Tony, I'm glad I got to kiss you on the forehead and tell you I loved you before you passed.
I'll miss the two chairs under your Maple tree and the missing sign that would of said ,"The Psychiatrist is in" as I drive by.
No more Wing Lees, Tin Tin for Chinese and making sure you got your senior discount and keeping the prices down.
Thank you for showing me the values of dignity and humility.

Thank you for your service.

Tony, was so proud of his Family and Bicknell's, Tony and Ned founded and ran so professionally. When I ran for Council, Tony gave me wise advice, I had observed his public service, always listening to everyone, having researched everything, whether on the Sanitary District, Town Council or a Building Committee. Can only say, knowing what he contributed in time and dedication to the Town of Scarborough, thank you Mrs. Attardo, Anthony and Paul, for sharing Tony with All of Us! Dick Cervizzi
