He was an avid fisherman, hunter, especially bird hunting and watching a beautiful English settler running through the woods. John was a skier and especially enjoyed gardening where he gave away his produce to family and friends. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Mayflower Organization where he was involved in genealogy and traced his family roots back to the 15th century.

When my siblings and I had a 50th year wedding anniversary for my parents, I was making my way around the table of my parents' friends when I came to Deedee and John Files. They were in their early 70s but appeared much as I remembered them. John had one of those faces that don't change all that much as they go through life. My father had a grade school class photo and the young John Files in the photo is the easiest to recognize. Both John and Deedee are wonderful people and I was fortunate to know them.

It has been said that when an elder passes away a library is lost. John Files was one of the most knowledgeable people on Gorham and New England history who I have ever met. I shall miss our Gorham history discussions but am so thankful to him for having them with me.

To the Files family, Dede, John and Scott and their families. Our deepest sympathies. John and his family were my childhood neighbors. A wonderful family and many memories. Some that I recall....He called me "Matilda". He invited me over for fried smelts that he would catch. My mother used to pack us up to go to the wonderful camp he built and I loved the beautiful stone fireplace he built. My first waterski experience was at John's camp!! His gardens were fruitful with Peaches that Sonja and I used to pick if they were hanging over the fence !! They were the ideal American family and wonderful neighbors. I will always remember you John .,,,,, and so will my family. My Dad went to school with John and has many fond memories of him through the years.,, He and my mother are in Florida and sends his condolences to all the family. Love to all. Anne and Jason Tucker

To the Files family,Gorham has lost a very special man. I remember him from my childhood days as a man who was always working on something, from the ski slope to the home he remodeled,to the classes where he taught us First Aid for the Ski Patrol,he was always busy with something, and still got the mail delivered !
