Jon has been on my mind for the past few days! His loss remains incomprehensible. He took his position as Executive Editor at The Sun very seriously and was well-respected by all. I remember going to the Bartlett School with him and Dick Hunt, photographer, to meet with two classes who wanted to respond to complaints from neighbors about them. He was patient and clear in explaining how newspapers work, and what they needed to do to respond. He actually ran their hand-written letters and photograph in The Sun. He also was so happy to head up our high-school newspapering advisory panel. He was genuinely loved and admired at The Sun. An unforgettable note he shared that, as a young boy, he often wrote letters to his grandmother. She returned them with grammar and spelling corrections in red. A true gentleman with warm humor and grace who, I am sure, is appalled at the state of newspapering today.

Having just learned of Jon's loss today... 12/1/16, I am stunned and deeply saddened to feel again the Lowell's community's loss when he moved to Waterbury.... but, ever more deeply, to know that his brilliant mind will no longer teach cub... and seasoned reporters how to hone and improve ttheir skills. (Jon would NEVER have approved of such a long, run-on sentence,,, but he's not here... or maybe he is.).
Condolences to Tammy, his bride, true love and partner in all things regarding the printed word. A most gifted and loving couple.

Jon was a force in forming The Sun's High School Journalism program. Advisor and mentor.. he helped our Newspapers in Education.Department to reach out to 26 local high schools and their reporters. The response was overwhelming. High school staffers and advisors came to a day-long experience at the Greater Lowell Vocational Technical High School under the auspices and encouragement of then headmaster Bill Collins.

Students chose their "specialty" and divided into classrooms where they learned about news, features, sports and obituaries, from Sun editors, photographers, graphic designers, advertising managers, circulation and distribution managers. One highlight of the day was "Editor vs Editor" a segment between Jon Kellogg, Executive Editor vs. Alex Costello, Editorial Page Editor. This session gave a peek into the difficult decisions editors must make about putting "news" in the paper. It was called "Why it should be". Vs "Why it shouldn't be" in the news. After their roles were explained, and actual news clippings shared, along with compelling arguments for both sides, the session - and the students - became very vocal for one side or the other., It educated and inspired advisors and students as well.

I like to think the day and the experience reinforced the weight and power of the printed word... and the thoughtful care needed before any opinion can be expressed in writing.. The entire staff of The Sun gave much of hemselves that day and Sports Editor Dennis Whitton shared the reporter's creed: "If your mother says she loves you, check it out." (Verify your facts from more than once reliable and objective source.)

This is only one of the many extraordinary lengths Jon went to share his passion for newspapering. We continue to be so grateful for his influence over us. He made us better people. I have so many more treasured stories of Jon's dedication to his craft. I hope they can be shared through this vehicle with you. Jon was, indeed, an upright model of honesty and objectivity.... a outstanding Editor in every sense of the word. He will be so missed by the newspaper community.... and by myself.... a friend and colleague.
