Joy Biddle Obituary

Joy Biddle, 79
BIDDEFORD -- Joy Biddle, 79, of Pool Road, died at Maine Medical Center on June 21, 2007.
Joy was born June 21, 1928, in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Stephen M. Biddle Sr. and Helen Pattee Biddle. She graduated from Brimmer and May School in Boston, Garland Junior College in Boston with an Art degree, and attended Gaucher College in Baltimore, Md.
Joy loved the arts and was a Founding Mother of Women Singing Out and a Founding Mother of Women in Harmony. She was a past member of several Art Associations, a member of Chorus Shore, and a strong supporter of Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Joy loved singing and harmonizing in her choir group. She was also a member of the Unitarian Church in Kennebunk.
Joy was a collector. She collected things, people, and ideas and never let go of any of them. When she loved, she loved unconditionally. She was a woman of extremely strong opinions and was deeply loved in spite, and because of her idiosyncrasies. She was well known locally for her paintings of the Maine Coast. She was very pleased to be able to make a living with her art.
Joy's brother, Stephen M. Biddle Jr., predeceased her. Joy is survived by her life partner, Marilyn Miller; her sister Nancy Lemeke of Merrimac, Mass.; many nephews and nieces; her chosen daughter Kim Berry; her dear friend Cecelia Furlotte; and her yellow lab Sophia Rose Middle.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 25 at 1 p.m., in the garden at 276 Pool Rd., Biddeford, with the Rev. Carol Strecker. Arrangements are under the care of Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk. www.bibberfuneral.com.

I first met Joy in the 1970's when she had a gallery at Rocky Neck in Gloucester. My mother used to gallery sit for Joy and some of the other artists. Joy became a treasured friend to both my mother and me. I stayed in touch with Joy even after I moved to Oregon in the mid-70's. I was always thrilled to hear from Joy as I felt a deep connection with her. I visited Joy & Marilyn in Maine several times over the years and always felt instantly at home even if I had not seen them in a long time. I will miss Joy very much and will hold my memories of her close to my heart.

My son gave me a Joy Biddle print and it has always been in a place of honor in our home. We were fortunate to visit her studio with visiting friends and it was a warm and friendly place displaying her great talent. The world was a much better place for her being in it. She will be missed, but her art will go on forever.

Joy was true to her name. She came into my life and introduced me to chorus and Sunny and opened my eyes to a whole new world. I will miss her. Love you.
