Thomas Merriman Obituary

Thomas Calvin
Merriman, 88
ILLINOIS -- Thomas Calvin Merriman, 88, passed away on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Manor Care Health Services, in Illinois, with his loving wife and family by his side.
Born in South Portland on April 4, 1922, he was the son of late Wylie Merriman and Cora (Mealey) Merriman of South Portland. He was a graduate of South Portland High School, and a few years after graduating married his wife of 68 years, Mary Eileen Oliver of Portland in 1942.
When the U.S. entered WWII, Mr. Merriman joined the Air Force and served his country in Asia as an Air Force Gunner in a B-24 Liberator bomber. Upon receiving his honorable discharge from the military, he joined E.G. Foden Company sales force and worked there for 30 years.
Tom served as Post Commander for the VFW in South Portland and spent his summers on Little Sebago Lake where he often swam and water skied with his children. In 1975 Tom moved to Florida to begin a new career in home management. He finally retired in 1992 and moved to Lake Hartwell, S.C. The very best part of retirement was that it allowed him time to spend with his wife and to work in his yard and tool shop. He spent the next several years moving from South Carolina to Florida, Georgia, and finally Illinois.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Eileen Oliver Merriman; two sons and daughters- in-law, Thomas C. Merriman II and Nadine Merriman of Bourbonnais, Ill., and Glen A. Merriman and Betty Merriman of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Linda and Michael Scaturro, Krista and Walter Powley, John and Sandy McAnallen, and Kara Merriman; and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Merriman was also survived by 10 siblings, brothers John, Gerald, Ronald, Richard and David Merriman, and sisters Barbara Brookings, Lucille Cooke, Glennis Skillings, Janet DeMonte and Karen Deemer. Mr. Merriman was preceded in death by his daughter, Eileen Mary (Merriman) Fields; brother, Wylie (Buck) Merriman, and sisters, Phyllis M. Jordan and June E. Erving.
He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered for his kind heart and tremendous love and dedication to his family.

I have many wonderful memories of fun times at Little Sebago and thanks to Tom, Eileen ("Big and Little") and the boys teaching me how to ski and sharing their boat time I also had many fun years of boating and sking in California, Arizona and Nevada.
Tom was a kind and generous man. I'm sure no one knows that better than his family.
May God bless you at this sad time.
