Mark P. Funk, age 42, a proud United States Marine and graduate of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA, passed away on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at his home in Thibodaux, leaving a legacy of love, service, and humor. He was born on June 25, 1982, the son of James William Funk, Jr. and Janice Phillips Funk.
Mark was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Monique, to whom he was married on April 21, 2012. She preceded him in death five years ago, on January 4, 2020, after a courageous battle with a brain tumor. Monique was his forever love, and her memory lived on in everything he did.
Mark had a passion for cooking and was known for his unmatched red velvet cupcakes, a treat he perfected with care. He brought joy to others through his unique sense of humor, often quoting his favorite movies and TV shows. Life was brighter and lighter when Mark was in the room.
A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, Mark served with honor and distinction during two tours of duty in Iraq, earning the rank of Sergeant. He served with Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, based in Baton Rouge, LA, exemplifying the Marine Corps motto: Non Sibi, Sed Patria (Not for Self, but for Country).
Mark was also a proud member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, where he forged lifelong friendships and exemplified brotherhood.
His survivors include his parents, James William Funk, Jr. (Jim) and Janice Funk, of Alexander, AR; his brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Nikki Funk, also of Alexander; niece and nephew, Brock Funk and Addison Funk; uncles, John Allan Funk, David Phillips and wife, Susie; Pat Phillips; cousins, Christopher and Amanda Phillips, Anna Phillips, and Ashley and Nick Brown.
He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bill and Pansy Funk, and Lera Bethel Colvin Funk, and by his maternal grandparents, June and Herbert Phillips.
The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, January 31, 2025, at 2:00, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church, Malvern, with Brother Adam Miller officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery under the direction of J. A. Funk Funeral Home.
Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 1:00.
Pallbearers will be John Kellar, Ken Roark, James Clesi, Jeff Sievert, Troy Lazaro, Daniel Dauterive, Blaise Pezold, and M. J. Dardar.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Dickie DeJarnatt a lifelong friend of James Funk, Francis Bourgeois, Tommy Blanchard, and Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines.
