Duncan MacSwain Obituary

Duncan Elliot MacSwain passed away early in the morning of Saturday, February 18. He died as he lived, recounting his many travel stories. Duncan was born on October 2, 1935, to Elliot MacSwain and Beatrice Duncan MacSwain. He was raised in Berkeley by his father, grandparents Reginald and Carolin MacSwain and Aunt Alexandra (Lass) MacSwain. His interest in science and nature was heavily influenced by his uncle, Cal Entomology Professor, John "Bugs" MacSwain. He attended Claremont Junior High and Piedmont High School where his fondest memories include playing on Coach Meunter's Football team. As #11, he was still connected with teammates from the Piedmont Football team, in addition to other Piedmont and Claremont Junior High alumni. Duncan graduated from U.C. Berkeley in 1957 and remained a proud and frustrated lifelong Cal alumnus. After graduation he became a Captain in the 353rd Psychological Warfare Battalion, Fort Bragg, North Carolina before entering the teaching profession. His goal of becoming a football coach led him to apply for a teaching position at Redwood High School. Selected from a pool of nearly 300 candidates, he began his career there. He retired from Redwood after 32 years, having taught World History, Psychology, Biology, Ethology, Basic Science, On-Location and serving as Dean of Student Services. In 1987 he was named Marin County's Teacher of the year. He was proud of the interest in learning that he generated among students across the academic spectrum and enjoyed lifelong friendships with many Redwood colleagues. He started as an assistant to Redwood Football Coach Bob Troppmann, but his coaching accolades were earned later. As Terra Linda's Girls' Cross Country Coach his team won the Nor Cal Cross Country Championship in 1981 and he was named the Nor Cal Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year. He led his varsity Redwood Girls Basketball teams to win two MCAL Championships and travel to play against teams in China, Australia and Fiji. Upon retirement, his life became 'busier than ever.' He expanded his world travels and led groups of enthusiastic travelers to photograph and explore culture and nature in areas including Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, the Peruvian Amazon, Machu Pichu, Papua New Guinea, Panama, Palau, Belize and Guatemala. Over years of travel he collected new species of insects in Papua New Guinea, brought basketball nets to villages in Yap, raised money for villages and schools damaged in the 2004 Tsunami in Thailand and studied Hedgehogs above the Arctic Circle in Sweden. He was an ardent and highly skilled photographer, leading effective and fun photography courses. Through photography he chronicled his family and captured rare birds, insects, wildlife and the beauty of multiple cultures. He loved sharing these photos and travel stories with schools, Rotary groups and others.Duncan was a lifelong Forty-Niner, Giants and Warriors fan and could be found in the stands during any sporting event played by his grandchildren.Friends, neighbors and generations of students and athletes were enriched by his wit, positivity, intellectual curiosity and indomitable spirit for life.Duncan is survived by his children and their families: Robyn and Rod Berry and children Beatrix and Kent; Jennifer MacSwain and children Scott and Jake Nies; Alex MacSwain; former spouse and close lifelong friend Lucy MacSwain; brother Travis MacSwain and nephew Rob MacSwain.Donations in Duncan's honor may be made to Angels of the Amazon, The Daraja Education Fund or Marin WildCare. https://angelsoftheamazon.org / https://daraja.org / https://discoverwildcare.org / A celebration of Duncan's life will be held in the Spring.

Duncan was my little league baseball coach in Parkmerced in 1960 and 1961. He had a great influence on my life. So glad I tracked him down in 2022 and we had coffee at the Coffee Roaster a couple of time. I gave him the stats he developed for the 1961 season. We had a couple of great talks. An amazing man

Dunc and I were teammates on the famed 1952 Piedmont High football team and we carried on correspondence over the years, signing in with our jersey numbers. He was 11; I was 58. Dunc was the editor and publisher of "The Thistle", our PHS Class of 1953 newsletter and kept track of our classmates´ comings and goings. Dunc was a great guy with a big heart. One of a kind. I join his many friends who are so saddened by his leaving, but so blessed to have had him in our lives. My condolences and best wishes to his family.

I will miss you Duncan. Your Biology class at Redwood was my favorite class because of you. Later we reconnected, and you taught my husband and I everything you knew about photography. I feel so privileged to have been your friend. God Bless You.

I remember "Mr. MacSwain" fondly and gratefully.
He was the first teacher to make me feel seen, heard, appreciated and respected unconditionally, during a time when I most desperately needed that. I still have the journal he made us write in Psych class! So happy to hear he lived such a full life.

I was already planning a trip to Peru and coincidentally heard Duncan give a travel talk about a trip to a distant Amazon jungle location. What a perfect side trip I thought so he helped me arrange it. What an amazing, never-to-be forgotten adventure I had - This 'side trip' turned out to be one of my most memorable adventures ever. Duncan was an amazing person. RIP and have heavenly travels.

Mr. MacSwain taught history at RHS in the 1960's and was an excellent teacher, very engaged with the students. He was both liked, and respected. Sounds like he had a full life. Condolences to family and friends.

Duncan "lured" me into the 1972 On Location program on my way through Redwood. I am confident the experiences of that semester changed the path of my learning and life to this day. I am just as confident that I am not the only one.

Thanks, Dunc.

Mr. McSwain was my Biology teacher back in 1981, I actually had to repeat his class and the second time around I was proud to have passed with a B+. I´ll never forget the first day in his class he told the students that sitting up front you were more likely to do better in his class, but I was a rebel and I sat in the back! He was right about passing or failing upon where you sat and I remembered that when I had to retake his class, this time I sat in the front and did way better then I expected of myself. I listened to him that time and became much more respectful to what he had to say.
It´s incredible to read all that he did with his life, such an adventurous human being!
May he Rest in Peace and find a new adventure wherever that shall be.
RIP Mr. McSwain

I was part of the Yucca all-stars in the summer of 1972 on the backpacking trip.in the redcap Quadrant 45 minutes east of Modesto and the 1973 2 week backpacking trip out of Jasper national park in Alberta C. Also I believe he coached water polo in 1973. He was a insightful and encouraging man. I suspect he had a big impact on a large number of students. Hr also taught my Senior Social Studies class. H e lived large and will be miossed.

Mr MacSwain was one of my beloved teachers at Redwood. His influence and guidance led me to becoming a teacher myself. This news brings tears but I hope that his family will read many many posts of how Duncan made an impact in Marin County and beyond.

He was genuine. Soft spoken. Always a smile. He was the photographer for our Redhead Baseball game vs. Taiwan in 1977. Years after, these photos he captured are memorable for so many who participated and attended this historic moment in Marin County Athletics. Over 4,000 people were there. Traffic in Larkspur came to a stop. He was also my sister´s basketball coach when they went to China.

May his memory always be a blessing. He will never be forgotten. One of the great educators and humanitarians that shaped my youth. (Redwood `71)

He made science learnable for all of us who felt lost with that subject matter. He was a great man. We Redwood students were lucky to have him as a role model as we stumbled blindly through "adulting".
