Michael Swanson Obituary
July 16, 1968 - July 24, 2025
Michael Henry Swanson, age 57, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2025 in Houston, Texas after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born on July 16, 1968 in Abingdon, Va. to Claude B. Swanson and Carol Sue Fryer Swanson of Martinsville, VA.
Michael was preceded in death by his brother; David A. Swanson; paternal grandparents, Sam and Ruth Swanson; and maternal grandparents, Leonard and Lois Fryer.
Michael achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1985 as a member of Troop 63 of the First United Methodist Church where he was also a member. He was a 1986 graduate of Laurel Park High School and graduated from Virginia Military Academy in Lexington, Virginia in 1990. He obtained two graduate degrees from the U.S. Army War College at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pa. In December of 2007, Michael received The Bronze Star of Medal for his service in Iraq. Prior to serving his country for 22 years, Michael was a Martinsville City Police Officer.
In addition to his parents, Michael is survived by his wife, Susan Swanson; son, Kevin Swanson; and stepson, Patrick Layton.

Micheal was my classmate at Carlisle School. He was my friend. He was a Boy Scout in my troop. When I see his father I always take the talk to talk to his father and we remember the good old days. I always had good memories of Micheal while we were at Carlisle School and I just went through some of my old pictures and saw him on the bus going to Williamsburg,VA. He had a big smile on his face. I will miss him. Rest In Peace Col. Micheal Swanson.
