Jerry Badger Obituary

Jerry Alan Badger, 82, passed away surrounded by family on February 8th at Baystate Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Birmingham, AL on August 22, 1939 to the late Emily (McCreanor) and Cecil Badger. He grew up in East Longmeadow, where he first developed a lifelong love of the outdoors through his involvement with the Boy Scouts. He attended Tech High School in Springfield before graduating from Mt. Herman School in 1957. He graduated from Bates College in 1961 with a degree in biology and attended Tufts Medical School for one year before choosing a career in education and earning an M.Ed. from Springfield College. In 1963, he married the love of his life, the former Joan Metzger, and settled in Wilbraham. That same year, Jerry began teaching at Minnechaug Regional High School. Over the next 25 years, he served as a teacher, coach, advisor, assistant principal, and finally as principal. Upon retiring from Minnechaug in 1988, Jerry went to work in the family-owned Parkinson Manufacturing Co. in Rhode Island. After four years at Parkinson, Jerry returned to education and was named the principal of Quaboag Regional High School in Warren. Upon completing a number of years there, he retired for good in 2003. To this day, generations of students will attest that Jerry always had time to listen and to help, no matter how big or small a problem might be.

Jerry was passionate about working with youth in his ”spare” time. He was the director of the Palmer Community Day Camp from 1965 to about 1971, and was very involved in scouting, helping to lead Wilbraham’s Troop 177 for many years.

In retirement, Jerry and Joan traveled to Europe and Hawaii. Jerry also continued to pursue his lifelong passion for photography, especially nature photography. Jerry was a longtime member of Wilbraham United Church and, like his father before him, was a Mason and a Shriner. He loved spending time with his family at their summer home in Maine (first at Goose Rocks Beach, and later on the Belgrade Lakes). Jerry also was fascinated by genealogy and thoroughly researched his own family tree, as well that of friends and family near and far.

He was the beloved husband to Joan E. (Metzger) Badger for 59 years; loving father of Lynn Logsdon and her husband Scott of Palmer, Doug Badger and his wife Marybeth of Colorado Springs; and devoted grandfather of Kendall Logsdon, Andrew Logsdon (and Catie Dill), Spencer Badger and Davis Badger; great grandfather of Savanna Logsdon, Aryanna Pellerin, and Ellyanna Pellerin. There will be calling hours Monday, February 14th, from 3:00-5:00 pm at the WILBRAHAM FUNERAL HOME, 2551 Boston Road, Wilbraham. There will be a Committal Service scheduled later in the spring at Woodland Dell Cemetery in Wilbraham. In lieu of flowers donations in Jerry’s name may be made to the Jerry Badger Memorial Scholarship, c/o Minnechaug Regional High School, 621 Main Street, Wilbraham, MA 01095. My deepest condolences to the Badger family and friends who knew and loved him. Mr Badger was my troop leader and principal. Mr. Badger was a role model to me and everyone else he came into contact with. I will always remember fondly the canoe trips he led to Maine in the late 1980s with our Troop. All the packing of dry boxes, gear, tents, and gorp at his home before we headed out, boys, dads, and Mr. Badger leading the way. And he had the coolest canoe. When I earned my Eagle Scout award I was most proud of doing it with Mr. Badger as my troop leader and mentor.

Later in life I connected with Mr. Badger on Facebook, and I always appreciated his occasional reactions to some life event I posted there.

Mr. Badger had an outsized impact on me as a young person, and I will be grateful to him forever for it.

I just saw this obituary recently when reviewing the Memories for Minnechaug.

As a student in Jerry´s Honors Biology class, I really enjoyed his teaching and high standards. Always a merry person, he combined teaching with humor daily. We enjoyed his labs and field trips to local woods and ponds.

The final exam was very difficult but prepared us for the Biology Achievement Test. That test was actually easier!

I will never forget Mr. Badger and my condolences to the family. One of the very best at Minnechaug...and that says a lot.

I just learned of Jerry's death.

The Badgers were special to our family; Jerry was a true role model for me as I grew up. We shared time with the Badgers in Maine (Moose Pond and Goose Rocks) , visited with Jerry when he was a student at Mt. Herman and participated with him in Boy Scouts. Because of him I developed an interest and applied to Bates College. My parents were close friends of Jerry's.

I can still hear Jerry playing the accordian. Two of his favorite songs were "Lady of Spain" and "The Happy Wanderer". He was good! His playing raised spirits.

But my most vivid memory of Jerry relates to his exceptional strength of character. Jerry couId always be counted-on to do the right thing. I can recall several occasions when making my own decisions I asked myself "what would Jerry do?" The answer always turned out to be the right way to go.

Thanks Jerry!

My perfect american father during one of the best years in my life at Wilbraham 1983-84!
Simply awesome. Or terrific as he used to say.

Our family benefited greatly from the wise advice, mentoring and friendship of Mr. Badger. My father Joe had the upmost respect for Jerry´s leadership skills and always caring approach as Minnechaug Principal and as a scout leader. My two brother John, Jeff and I interacted with Jerry in the worlds of scouting and school. He made a positive impact in all that he touched in our lives and the lives of thousands of other young people.

The Minnechaug High School he ran in Wilbraham may not have been perfect but it was an extremely vibrant and well run organization with a tremendous staff and faculty focused every day on maximizing the potential of students in academics, extra curricular activities and sports. It reflected the strong values, high standards, and positive approach of a great person and a talented educator and leader.

He will be missed!

Jerry was a special person. Myself and my family owe him and his family a great debt. The world will not be the same without him. He will be remembered kindly by myself and the Class of 1977

I first came to know Jerry at Scout Camp Woronoak before we were teenagers. He was a standout achiever and leader even then! We went our separate ways until, years later, June and I enrolled our kids in Wilbraham schools and our son joined Troop 177. Jerry became a dear friend and mentor to the four of us; through the Minnechaug years that both Amy and Andy enjoyed and grew from, the scouting years that he shepherded Andy and me through, and the two generation family friendship that has developed and included Joan and June. We are truly sorry we're not able to pay our respects to him - and to his wonderful family - in person. But we have been blessed by his presence in our lives and are so thankful for the difference he has made in them and in so many others. And it's comforting to know his legacy will live on through Joan, Lynn, Doug and your wonderful family.

I have the utmost respect for Jerry. From the days as a counselor at Palmer Day Camp to working in the Wilbraham Public Schools. A man with a kind heart and a logical mind. He and my Dad were quite a duo. My condolences to his family.

My dad forwarded this to me and with a very heavy heart started thinking of what an influence he was, and still is on me growing up. I´ll never forget his laugh and amazing disposition let alone his knowledge of the outdoors and nature. Dad and I were talking and I remember Mr Badger reading the poem "The cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service at a campfire somewhere on a campout with our scout troop. My thoughts and prayers are with you all and the extended family. We are all blessed to have been influenced by him and I will always remember what an amazing man I had the privilege of getting to know.
