Bud Cole Obituary

Bernard H. "Bud" Cole of Northampton, PA, died July 21, 2017 at St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network, Bethlehem, PA, after a long illness. He was born in Allentown, PA, the son of the late Bernard G. Cole and the late Alvona (Sterner) Cole. He graduated from Whitehall High School in June 1962 and headed to East Stroudsburg University in August to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Bud graduated in May 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education with a specialty in Health and Physical Education. He was certified in Driver Education and Outdoor Education. He was a member of Sigma Pi, ESSC. Bud was a dedicated and creative educator who taught fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in Northampton Area School District from 1966-1999, awakening a love of science and the outdoors in many of his students. In 1981 he received the Northampton County Conservation District Outdoor Educator of the Year award. He served as the Northampton Borough Schools PTA President and worked on many education committees and projects. Bud also showed his love of nature, his concern for the environment, and his enthusiasm for bettering his community through countless hours of volunteer service. Bud has been affiliated with the National Ski Patrol for 47 years. He volunteered at the Walnutport Canal Lock House Museum, Lehigh Gap Nature Center, State Theatre in Easton, and the Wildlands Conservancy. He was co-founder and Vice President of the Bertsch-Hokendauqua-Catasauqua Watershed Association. He served for many years as the ESSC Sigma Pi, Beta Psi Alumni President. Although Bud said that English was never his favorite topic to teach, after retiring from teaching he discovered a passion and flair for writing and photography, particularly about the wonders of nature and the outdoors life. Through his writing, Bud combined his intense curiosity about nature, his love of animals, his deep enjoyment of meeting and talking with new people, and his delightful sense of humor. Bud was an active member and board member of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association and active member of the Outdoors Writers of America Association. He received a certificate in 2010 from the POWA board of directors for outstanding service to the organization. He has won awards for his writing and photography with awards from POWA as well as 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 Professional Keystone Newspaper Awards for his outdoor column, Bud's View, and in 2017, a first-place award for his sports/outdoor column. The column has been published in eight regional newspapers. His freelance work has been published in Pennsylvania Magazine, Pennsylvania Game News, Pennsylvania Angler and Boater, Baltimore Recreational News, National Bear Foundation, and Ohio Valley Outdoors. He has written two children's novels, The Mystery of Little Bear and the soon-to-be published Bear and Buddy's Remarkable Adventures. One of Bud's proudest moments was learning that he had been named the recipient of the 2016 Helen G. Brown Award from ESU for his accomplishments as an educator, a journalist, and enthusiast of nature and the outdoors. Survivors: Bud has been married to Beverly L. (Cole) Cole for 24 years. Bev shared Bud's love of travel, gardening, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, hiking, and many other outdoor activities. Both Bud and Bev were adjunct professors at Northampton Community College instructing both children and adults. They created and were co-directors of the The Three B'S Mobile Nature Center. They traveled throughout the United States and abroad on Bud's writing trips and for their own learning and enrichment. Their interests in the outdoors inspired them to lead trips skiing in Europe, New England, Western U.S. and explorations in Ecuador's Cloud Forest and the Galapagos Islands. Services: A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00 PM on Monday July 31, 2017 at the Blue Mountain Resort-Summit Lodge, 1660 Blue Mountain Dr., Palmerton, PA 18071. The Schisler Funeral Home, 2119 Washington Ave., Northampton, PA 18067 has been entrusted with his care and arrangements. Contributions: May be offered to: The Wildlands Conservancy and Lehigh Gap Nature Center C/O the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.schislerfuneralhomes.com.

I met Mr. Cole in fourth grade when he was my teacher. That was over fifty years ago. As the years fly by you think and reflect on the past. Mr. Cole was , is and always will be one of the truly wonderful memories of a young child growing up in Northampton. I really cherish those memories of him.

Dearest Bev, Thank you for sharing your Bud with so many. He was a one of a kind--he could make you mad and in a second have you laughing so hard your cheeks hurt! Vinnie loved his pranks and loved sharing them with anyone! He was a great teacher who inspired me to be a better teacher. From teaching his boys how to tie a tie for a fancy Thanksgiving dinner to teaching all of the kids how to tap a maple tree, he was a wealth of knowledge. He taught the important things beyond the curriculum and for that his students were blessed to say he was their teacher. I can only imagine him pulling his pranks from heaven so watch for them and smile. I know I will! You were his "lady in red" and I know he will always be watching over you. Chris and I feel very fortunate to say he was our friend. Patty Jones

"Mr Cole " as I would call you - my 5th grade teacher at George Wolf. I will never forget all the amazing things you taught us; we were the class that tapped the maple trees and made maple syrup, the class who learned how a sailboat worked because you brought yours into school for us, every kid in class got someone to play with and was never left out because our class always played team games at recess ( and I'll never forget the time I landed in a puddle trying to play kickball you handled that so well). Mr. Cole you made coming to school fun - our Monopoly money to trade in for gifts taught us the importance of responsibility and that nothing in this world is free! You made learning so much fun - what a special gift you shared with us! Fast forward to the last five years. It was a pleasure to reunite with you through deer hunting. I still felt weird calling you "Bud" so I still continued to call you Mr.Cole no matter how many times you told me not too!! I will miss the times you stopped by the butcher shop with your harvest and the time you took to just sit and chat with us - you are an amazing man and I am so blessed to have had you touch my life in many ways!! We sure have missed you these past months but I am grateful you are no longer suffering and sick anymore! Your impact on this world will continue on and we will have many conversations of you in the up coming hunting season!!! May your ears ring with our memories of you!!!

Bev - I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and the worlds! He was a very respectful and motivational man!

To The Family of Bud Cole,
So very sorry to hear this news. I had Mr. Cole for a sixth grade teacher at the former Northampton Wolf Elementary School. He was a really great teacher and loved by so many of his students. I attended a book signing of his back in 2013 at the Northampton Area Public Library. I will forever cherish the book he signed for me. I will miss reading his articles in the Northampton Press. Bud will be sadly missed by so many. Prayers and Condolences to his family and friends.

Bev, I will treasure my memories of time spent with you and Bud over the past several years, from the remarkable week on the Yacht Floreana in the Galapagos, to the trips to dialysis, and the visits with Windsor at Saint Luke's. You two were a remarkable couple, you are a saint, and Bud was an unforgettable character. Much love,

July 27, 2017

Dear Bev,
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. Buddy has always stirred fond memories of our school days together and I'm sure all the lives he has touched, through his occupation, hobbies, and nature endeavors, will be better off having known him. He will be missed and may he rest peacefully with our Lord. Joanie Schrader Buckno

When we first moved to this area 20 years ago, I discovered the Town & Country Gazette and very much looked forward to his entertaining and educational stories about his dog Blu. Had even hoped to meet him (as I also had written stories about a "talking" dog with life lessons). In the last few years I truly missed his stories and am so sorry to learn that it was because of illness. This GREATLY TALENTED Man will be so missed by so many and I send my sorrows to his family. Very Very Sorry. With Deepest Sympathy, Peggy Peters

Hey Bev Even though he's been so sick for so long I still have trouble wrapping my hands around his passing. After just seeing him again recently I really didn't expect this. You were his devout angel.
I will always have good memories of our annual pre-Christmas get togethers. WHAT A SENSE OF HUMOR !! Fit right in with the rest of us.

No more suffering, may he rest in peace.

Elgin and I will always remember the great day we had traveling along the Delaware River looking for bald eagles with Bud. He was always fun to be with and had so much background knowledge in nature. I'll remember him with a smile on his face and a joke on his lips.

I saw Bud only rarely, but read his column religiously. He will be sorely missed, but perhaps some of the younger generation he influenced will take up his torch of ecological conservation.
We hope that Bev and all Bud's lovies will take comfort in the joyful memories you created together.

My sincerest sympathies on your loss of a good man. I met Bud about 30 years ago, when he led a ski trip to Switzerland. I was a slower skier and got disoriented in the white-out fog at the top of the mountain. He held up the group and patiently waited (and called out) for me. A few days later he helped me find the contact lens that had popped out of my eye. He was kind and helpful to everyone. Although I haven't seen him for a very long time, I know he will be greatly missed.

Thank you for the experience of a lifetime seeing an majestic bald eagle flying over the Delaware River one cold winter day. My husband Glenn and I will always remember that day. We were sorry to hear of his passing but we know he left a legacy of sharing his love of nature with so many.

I was eleven years old when I last saw Mr. Cole. I prefer to call him Mr. Cole because I to was one of his first students in the 4th grade at the Washington School Building in Northampton. A school teacher especially of young children has an awesome responsibility because they are touching the lives of children during their tender and formative years. All I can say is he touched my life in a very special way and I'm sure there are countless of other people now adults who can say that. That is the definition of a very special person and Mr. Cole was that person. With deepest sympathy. God Bless You All.

Bud was a special person and will be missed. There can be nothing better to say about someone in my opinion than "well done" and so be it with you Bud. So I say well done and farewell my ever humorous friend. Keep them smiling where ever you travel.

My deepest sympathy goes out to dear (St.) Bev. You are an inspiration by modeling the true love between husband and wife, before and after Bud's illness. Please let me know if I can help out in any way(s). You and Bud have had a particularly difficult couple of years and I commend you both for always looking on the bright side. But Bud is now at peace and in an abundantly beautiful place, where he can explore new adventures...

God Bless you both.

We will always have nothing but fond memories of our times with Bud and Bev. We will always cherish our times fishing at the Jersey Shore - MATPRA Marketplaces - golf cart rides at Fern Hall - Bernie's secret brandy recipe - "Red, Red, Wine" - MusicFests at Bethlehem - and, of course, all the laughs and good times we have shared over the years.

Bud - we will miss you.

So sorry to hear about the loss of my favorite teacher. I had him his first year out of college in 4th grade and then again in 6th grade. I had the biggest crush on him. He took our 4th grade class on my first ski trip ever. What an adventure! He'd always remember when I would run into him now and then. I will never forget him.
