Michael Ufberg Obituary

Michael H. Ufberg, 79, of Allentown, PA,, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, June 12, 2021. Known lovingly as 'Mickey' to friends and family, he leaves behind his beloved wife, Eileen, of 54 years. Born in Shamokin, PA, Mickey is the son of the late Helen and David Ufberg, and brother to Nancian and Carol. He is survived by his children, David, Jacob, Larry, Bonnie & Matthew, and his 16 grandchildren. Mickey graduated with honors from Temple University Medical School and practiced Gastroenterology for over 40 years. He selflessly served the Lehigh Valley community with distinction, earning numerous awards for his clinical expertise, exemplary teaching, and compassionate care. He was particularly proud to serve as Chief of Gastroenterology at Lehigh Valley Hospital, and served as President of the Health Care Council of Eastern Pennsylvania. He lived a life of service, always readily available to patients, and generously willing to donate his medical care to those in need. He was a pillar of the Jewish Community. Locally, he was an active member of Congregation Sons of Israel, served as President and 16 year Board member of the Jewish Day School, was President of the Jewish Federation, and served as Campaign Chairman, on multiple occasions. He was a founder and President of the Maimonides Society of Allentown, coordinating Jewish Physicians to help those in need, and helped establish the Gastroenterology wing at the Western Galilee Hospital in Israel. His family and his friends were the center of his life. He strongly instilled in his children the importance of family. Mickey's wisdom and kindness were only exceeded by his selflessness and humility. He was a true patriarch, admired and respected, and a role model to all who were lucky enough to know him.

Services: 2PM Sunday, June 13th at Bachman, Kulik and Reinsmith Funeral Home, 17th & Hamilton Streets, Allentown. The family will greet friends at the Ufberg home immediately following the services. Interment will take place Monday, June 14th at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, PA.

35 years ago I was lucky enough to be a patient of Dr. Ufberg´s. Sitting in the waiting room last week I missed him opening the door with a big smile and giving me the best patient care. I asked about him and was sad to hear of his passing. I will never forget him. My condolences to his family. He always spoke of his family with such love.

I just learned of Dr. Ufberg's passing and wanted to extend my condolences. He spoke so highly of all of his family. Dr. Ufberg saved my father's life in 1974 and again a year later when he had complications. I saw Dr. Ufberg myself when is was in my early 30s and he was such a professional, but also felt like family due to the history. My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time and he will be missed greatly.

As a professional colleague and neighbor I have known Mickey since 1976. He was an excellent physician, a great gastroenterologist, and a respected leader at the Lehigh Valley Hospital until his retirement. His friendship and all of those "hellos" on his morning walks will be missed. The community is a poorer place without Mickey being part of it. Condolences to his family and many other friends.

Dr. Ufberg treated my father before he passed. He also administered tests on me over the years and did so with humor and compassion. My mother worked at LVHN as a financial counselor and marveled how Dr. Ufberg offered “Sunday Appointments” for those who could not afford procedures but needed to be examined and perhaps treated. He was an amazing man and is missed. He made an impact on a lot of people’s lives! God bless him!

I only knew Dr. Ufberg as a patient. I had the utmost respect for his professionalism, kindness and skill . He did not suffer fools lightly and had a wicked sense of humor. His copy of “Walter, the Farting Dog” never failed to make me smile. My sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues who had an opportunity to know him on a personal level.

Eileen and family, your Wissahickon Beach family is so saddened by Mickey’s passing. There are no words. We looked forward to seeing you guys in the summer riding bikes or sitting on the beach with all of the Ufbergs. The way you were with your family sets the example for us all to follow. We are all thinking about Eileen and all of the Ufbergs and of Mickey. What a good guy. Love Mark and Sue Rabinowitz and the whole Wissahickon family.

Dear Eileen and family,

I was deeply saddened today to read about Mickey's passing. So many of us have lost such a special person, but will never be forgotten. I had the pleasure of knowing Mickey for many years, as
he was a great gastroenterologist that took care of the patients I used to send him over the years gone by. Will miss both his expertise and sense of humor that made him so special. My sincere condolences and prayers.

Sincerely,

Dr. Ufberg was an amazing doctor to me for over 20 years. He treated me through a terrible illness, and somehow made it bearable. Over the years, because I was at his office so much, he became someone I learned to admire and trust. His winning smile, sense of humor, and compassion made him stand out in a field where too often patients are treated as numbers and not people. I was saddened to learn of his passing, but Heaven is all the richer. My condolences to his family. My prayers are with you.

It is with the greatest sadness to learn of Mickey’s passing. He was a dear friend to our family, a treasured doctor to my parents, a pillar of the Jewish community! He defined the word “mensch”. He will be sorely missed.
