William Atherton was my uncle. I can't tell you all how wonderful it is to read all of the fond recollections and memories of Bill here. It's clear that he really touched a lot of lives with his immense knowledge of history, his adventures and experiences and his incredible sweetness.... For many years my brothers and I would get together with my uncle for family dinners, both near our place in the PA mountains, and then more recently, at our favorite local spot, Miguel's. It was a ritual we all looked forward to, for we always took away a new bit of knowledge about our family history or a neat experience Bill had had. On our last outing together, Bill, my brothers and I visited Steamtown and the Lackawanna Iron Works in Scranton, an excursion he had wanted to take for a long time. We had a great time, and it was clear how thrilled he was at the opportunity to make the trip. I am so glad we were able to make that last trip with him...Bill, we love you and will miss you dearly.

To the Family of Bill, my name is Laurie and I am a night manager at Wegmans Food Market in Nazareth. I had the pleasure of saluting Bill every night at the store as he came in for his muffin and coffee, he and I would sit for a while and he would tell me great stories of his time in the service and of days gone by here in Pennsylvania. I so enjoyed our conversations together, I will truly miss saluting this fine gentlemen, giving him a hug and helping him find a good meal, he was my friend, my customer, and he will be missed by not only me but my co-workers at the coffee bar and the bakery staff. God rest your soul in Heaven Bill, you served your country well, I was proud to know you, best regards Laurie Constantino

Mr.Atherton You will be greatly missed you unkowingly filled the role of grandfather to me after my grandfather one of your close firends Allen Hahn passed away. There are so many things you taught me and I will forever be greatful to you for everything you taught and showed me. I will never forget the impromptu inspections you jokingly gave to me and my brother. The Henry homestead wont be the same without you but I know in spirit you will always be there looking down and smiling as you see the legacy you left behind flourish. Goodbye and God bless you my dear friend Semper Fi.

Those of us who have worked in retail know that it is rare to find a customer who truly cares for you beyond your abilities to assist them professionally. Mr. Atherton, you were that rare customer – not merely a customer, but a devoted friend and supporter. Your genuine appreciation of the Borders staff on a professional and a personal level inspired us each time we had the pleasure of your company in our store. You made us feel like a million bucks, and you will never be forgotten. With love,

I'd like to say Bill was my favorite customer at Borders. But over the years, he became much more like a surrogate grandfather for me. No matter what kind of day I was having, seeing him come into our store/cafe and hearing his stories always brightened my evening. He truly loved our store and was touched by how much we loved him. If there's a heaven, Bill is flying his favorite planes for all eternity :')

I had the pleasure of volunteering at Bill's homestead in Jacobsburg at first, then later got to know him better as a barista at Borders where he was a frequent and beloved visitor. Everyone at the store knew Bill and enjoyed his visits. He was so energetic and passionate about flying and history that it was often easy to forget his age. It was an honor and a pleasure to have known you, Bill. I will miss seeing your smiling face. --Allison Schell
