Richard Guckert Obituary

Richard is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Jason Schrampfer, Woodstock, GA, son and daughter-in-law Hunter and Beth Guckert, Marietta, GA, brother and sister-in-law Ronald and Karen Guckert, Wayne, PA, his six grandchildren, Benton, Olivia, Chloe, Bella, Grayson and Harper. He is preceded in death by his mother Evelyn Smith Guckert and other family.

Richard was born on October 20 in Darby, PA, outside Philadelphia. He graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA where he earned a BS in Biology. He went on to earn a Masters in Invertebrate Physiology at Kent State University. From there he began a Doctorate program at Florida State University where he met his wife Ann Jenkins. They married in 1967 and enjoyed just shy of 54 years together.

As a young boy Richard enjoyed spending time in the woods of Nova Scotia, Canada where his extended family resided. He explored the woods around his Aunt Genesta's house in Port Medway and waded in the crisp cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Long Cove. He became fascinated by the diversity of life on Earth and the variety of ecosystems. This turned into his life-long passion as a student and teacher of bio-sciences.

Richard taught Biology at The Walker School in Marietta for over 30 years. He was as passionate about his students as he was in his exploration of life on Earth. When asked about his favorite pupils, he responded that "they were all his favorites". He truly loved each and every one of them. Many former students honored him in his final days. He was truly blessed by his career at The Walker School.

In his spare time, Richard was a craftsman in the kitchen as well as the workshop. He was a gourmet cook, master of the grill, and a capable handyman. He enjoyed wood carving and basket weaving. He read non-fiction, science related material, and his daily newspaper. He enjoyed feeding and watching birds and exploring the mountains of North Georgia.

Much like his passion for life and teaching, Richard loved his wife, children, and grandchildren intensely. He kept up on all daily occurrences and celebrated their milestones in learning vigorously.

A memorial service will be held at a future date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First United Methodist Church - Marietta - Organ Fund at 56 Whitlock Ave, NW, Marietta, GA 30064
