June 29, 1921 - June 30, 2013
Petra was born on June 29, 1921 in Ruidoso, Texas. She was the eldest daughter of eight children. Petra moved to Merced, California in 1943, where she resided until her death. At 92, Petra died of natural causes. Petra is survived by her three children, Ruben Apodaca, Hector Apodaca (Evelyn), Gloria Mendez (Frank) and one sister, Jessie Bianchi. She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Robert Apodaca, as well as six of her siblings. Petra had 13 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Petra was a devoted matriarch, at times working up to three jobs to care for her family. She worked as a domestic worker and at Merced Cannery Growers for over 20 years and enjoyed crocheting, quilting and cooking. Anyone could attest to her culinary skills. One of Petra's joys in life was her grandchildren. Petra was a devoted parishioner and volunteer. She will be greatly missed.
The viewing will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 562 W. 13th St. (Corner of 13th & M St.), on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 8:45 AM. Rosary to follow at 9:30 AM and Mass beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery immediately after.
The family would like to thank Dr. De La Pena, Maria Herrera (faithful care person for 10 years) and the staff at Anberry and Hospice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Whitton Family Funeral Service in Merced, CA.
