Carol Gable Obituary

Carol J Gable
Aug. 1,1919-Jan. 12, 2015
San Mateo
Carol J. Gable, 95, of San Mateo CA, died on Monday, 12 January after a long life, a brief illness, and a readiness to move on. There was a private family gathering held in her memory.
Carol was born in Los Angeles to Martha and Edward McKee. She was the first in her family to earn a college degree when she graduated in 1943 from UCLA, where she met her future husband, Dean Williams. They married in 1942 and together had two daughters. The family lived in Los Angeles and Lake Oswego OR before moving to San Mateo, where Carol has lived since 1957. Carol renewed her teaching credential in the late 60s and taught physical education for 15 years at Engvall Junior High and Parkside Intermediate, both in San Bruno.
A hallmark of Carol's personality was her intense need to engage, to be involved. She played golf and was an active member of the San Mateo Women's Golf Club and later of The Fairway Singles, where she met Ron Gable. They married in 1979. She learned to play bridge as a teenager and played socially for much of her life. Later she played tournament bridge and became a Life Master of the ACBL at age 77. She learned Tai Chi. She volunteered at Sequoia Hospital and at Mission Hospice. She became part of a water exercise class. And finally, she taught movement classes at Lesley Towers in San Mateo, where she was a resident for 15 years. Recently, she had moved to Lesley Terrace in Belmont. Funny, feisty, an inspiration, Carol was fiercely independent.
She is preceded in death by her husbands, Dean Williams, Jerome Condran and Ronald Gable and by her sister, Anna Laura, "Scotty" Griffin. She is survived by her two daughters, Diane and Teri, two grand-daughters, Morgan and Joanna, and two great-grandsons.

My name is Pauline (Fenton) Dubois. Carol Jane was my Dad's cousin. Our Grandmother was Nellie Blackmar (Durkee) Fenton. My Dad Howard Fenton was Grandmother Nellie's son. I remember Cousin Carol Jane and her daughters Diane and Teri. We visited their family when they lived on Lake Oswego and we all swam in the lake. We had a lovely time.

We are very sorry to hear of Carol's passing. We so much enjoyed her visits and her wonderful company. We loved getting her notes with pictures of her family and descriptions of all the things she was doing. She was indeed very engaged in life, and we will remember and miss her always. Ron and Doris were lucky to have had her in their lives. Our condolences to Carol's family.
