Charles Winget Obituary
December 26, 1925 - July 5, 2013
Resident of Cupertino
Dr. Charles Merlin Winget fell asleep at home Friday, July 5, 2013. He was born to the late Ruth Mae Coburn and Charles Ansel Winget, December 26, 1925, in Garden City, KS. Following HS, Charles served in the Navy. Upon his discharge, he received his BA from SF State University and his PhD in Physiology at UC Berkeley. He then went to work at NASA Ames Research Center as a Research Scientist on studies related to the space shuttle program, authoring many publications and receiving numerous awards. He also taught at U of Toronto, UC Davis, and served as a guest lecturer at many universities.
Charles was a hard-working man who loved his family dearly. He was a very generous and unselfish person. He was an exceptional father and husband. He will be greatly missed and will never be forgotten.
He is survived by his loving wife Katherine; son Steven; daughters Eleni, Jean Ann, and Jo Anne; and in-laws Demetra Barkas and Thomas Barkas. Trisagion service, Sunday July 14th, at 7 p.m.; Funeral service Monday, July 15th at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church 1260 Davis St, San Jose. Interment to follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, San Jose. Donations to St. Nicholas preferred.

Dear Kathy, Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I know how mnuch Chuck meant to you, and how many challenges the two of you faced together, with a grace few others posess. His suffering is over now, and you will be united once again in Paradise when the Lord calls you home. You have given so much to everyone in your family, and are a model of devotion for all of us. Bless you as you begin this next chapter of your life. Paul and Laura join me in extending their condolences to you, Eleni, and Stevie.

Katherine - You may not recall, but I am an Ames colleague of Chuck's and I worked with him during the International Microgravity Laboratory-1 mission, STS-42. We were in the same branch and I enjoyed our discussions and his invitations to the Greek Festival in San Jose every year. Condolences and may he rest is peace.

Dear Cathy, Eleni, Steve & Tula,
Although I didn't see Chuck often, I fondly remember the family get-togethers, usually celebrating birthdays. No matter what Chuck was going through, I remember his reslience and optimism.....and he always had a smile for everyone. He will forever be in our hearts. May you have peace knowing he enhanced all of our lives, just by being.
