Craig Singer Obituary

Craig Singer 3/8/57 - 11/25/08 Craig died suddenly of a heart attack Tuesday morning, November 25. Craig worked nearly his entire professional life in the criminal justice system, as a deputy district attorney and deputy public defender. He died doing what he most enjoyed as a lawyer - mentoring another lawyer preparing for court. He was 51. Craig was born in Boston on March 8, 1957. His family moved to San Jose, California when he was eight years old. He graduated from Pioneer High School, San Francisco State Univ., and Golden Gate Univ. School of Law. Shortly after he passed the Bar exam he moved to Fresno to work for the District Attorney, where he later met and married Charlotte Zylka, at the time a deputy public defender. Craig spent his whole life caring for others - his family, friends, fellow attorneys and law enforcement officers, the victims of the crimes he prosecuted and those charged with the crimes he defended. He will be greatly missed by his loving family - wife Charlotte, son Ben and daughter Claire; parents Joan and Robert, brothers Eric and Mitchell, Mitchell's wife Shelley and loving nieces and nephews. Craig's persona was larger than life and his heart was much bigger than most. He gave of his time to community organizations and to the schools attended by his children, whom he cherished. A memorial service to celebrate Craig's life will be held Friday, December 5th at 3:30pm at St. Anthony of Padua in Fresno. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Craig Singer Memorial Scholoarship Fund in care of St. Anthony of Padua School at 5770 No. Maroa, Fresno, CA 93704-2038.

I just heard today of Craig's passing, and I am so sorry for your great loss. I knew Craig through Temple Youth programs when we were in our teens-he was funny, outgoing and always looking out for others. I have thought of him over the years and hearing all he did in his life is a clear indication that he lived his life with joy.

Craig was truly one of the finest people I knew, and I have many fond (and cherished) memories of the time we spent together in school. Craig, Jon, Larry and Kevin were like brothers to me and I will forever be grateful for their friendship. My heart breaks for your loss.

What a loss to the Criminal Justic Community! Craig was larger than life. I have many memories of Craig and I in Court. Whether he was a DA or a Public Defender, you knew it was going to be a challenge. What they say is true, that only the good go young! We will miss you Craig! Your family is in our prayers and thoughts.

To my cousin Craig, one of the BIGGEST Boston sports fans who I shared tears with immediately after the final out when the Red Sox finally won in 2004, you will be greatly missed. But now you can watch all the games with Bubbie and my Dad. From tears of joy to tears of sadness...Rest in peace...we'll all miss you!
