The very kind and warm hearted Dr Doty performed surgery on my mom 2 yrs ago. He opened his arms to my wary mom, and she trusted him with her life. We wont forget how you helped our family. Now she is seeking Dr Doty again, and I find your obituary online. We are crushed. Deepest condolences to the family. Dr Doty, may you rest in peace.

I only learned of Dr. Doty's passing 2 days ago. I am stunned and heartbroken that such a wonderful doctor and human being is gone. He was my doctor for 12 years and helped me through an especially difficult time in 1999. I will never forget how warm, kind and sensitive he was. He had a wonderful sense of humor, too. I enjoyed talking with him about my horse when I would see him for annual check-ups. Once when he was mountain biking, I saw him up at Garrod Stables. He will be profoundly missed and I will never forget how he touched my life.

You two danced at my wedding and the gift you gave Rance and I hangs in our Dinning room. Of course an Ansel Adams photo of half dome.
Rance hiked up the back side. My fear of heights left me siting on a rock half way up reading a GI journal article. I think of Jeff often when I look at that picture. He was a great mentor for me at the VA, Sepulveda. Dr Gu, Jeff and I were a funny(odd and fun) team. Jeff taught me so much and I think of him as a big brother. Of course I am shocked. Like many of us, some of us have not seen Jeff , or were not part of his current life.He made a real impact on me, as I see he made on others. He was a man that created relationships everwhere he went. I always wanted to run into him again somewhere and give him a big hug. He was a real touch stone for me along the way. I feel that his passing left an empty spot for me and I wish you peace and grace at this time and always.

Dear Elvira,
I am so sad to hear about Jeff's passing and appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Jeff was a unique, talented and very special person. Our friendship was and remains very important to me even though we've not had contact for quite some time. His name comes up not infrequently in many of my thoughts and conversations. I will particularly treasure the hiking trips we took to the Napali Coast, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon. The two years we shared a house in West Hartford were immeasurably better because of his presence. I am so sorry for your and your childrens' loss. If you are ever in the Boston area please stop by. Our thoughts are with you.
Warmly

I have such fond memories of Jeff. It seems no matter what the arena (working with him as a fellow at UCLA, skiing with him in Bend, climbing with him in Canada and the Sierras), the experience was always vibrant, humorous, and so very positive. I was always so impressed by this man who could combine such intelligence and energy with humility and groundedness. Now that Jeff has moved on, I realize how much I will miss him and for that I am truly sorry. My best to Vi, Michael, and Rachel. Will Chen.

My condolences to the Doty Family. I went to Berkshire with Jeff, and spent quite a bit of time with him. I will always treasure the last time we spent together, having his Dad pick us up at school in his Avanti, spending the weekend with Jeff and his Dad (yeah - Wordless Workshop). We have not communicated since 1971, but he was a special person back then, and was probably throughout his life. See you later Jeff.

Doty family,
Our condolences on your loss. We stumbled upon Dr Doty's obit during a google search and were shocked when we learnt of his passing.
Dr. Doty twice performed surgery on me (Anish). The first one cured me of perennial heartburn and the second emergency appendectomy prevented a life threatening situation.
I loved his bright and cheerful nature and the way he injected humor during the doctor - patient dialog.
Our biggest laugh was over his quip - "I reserve the right to be wrong", before my appendectomy!
Hopefully time has healed some of your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Family of Dr. Jeff Doty,
Please accept my deepest sympathy. Dr Doty performed abdominal surgery on me last summer and saved my life. He researched many journals and was thoroughly prepared to take on the task of fixing a medical condition that was life threating. Post surgery, we had a few discussions and I felt that I had not only had a great surgeon but a good friend that I could trust with my life. I was deeply shocked and sadden to hear just recently that he had passed away. Good speed Dr Doty. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family eternally. I will be forever grateful for what you did for me. With warm regards, Joe Carioggia

JEFF
There was a sense of bliss, of joy
Unbridled happiness in his smile, how he laughed
The world was a place to touch and climb and enter and explore
There was a sense of blitheness, of lightness
Bountiful glee in his questions and answers
He never took himself or you too seriously
No fun that!
There was a sense of play, of spontaneity
Puckish whimsy in his comebacks and putdowns
The world was a kick!
A hoot!
Enjoy yourself
There was a sense of kindness, of fairness
An embrace of life’s somersaulting presence
He would play music loud and jump around, the better to let it catch you
There was a sense of loving, of exuberance
Giving all to who he was with
Sun shifts on an open field late in the afternoon
Rain dimples a bed of snow on a mountainside one fine spring morning
Jeff is there
And he is where curiosity takes root and adventure calls, and where delight flowers and flourishes and grows, becoming a sure part of the landscape of our own true lives

Dr. Doty did my stomach surgery in July 2007. He visited me regularly of course in my Good Sam room during the next week and always was bright and cheery. To me he was a saint. And like all others who knew him, I am very deeply saddened by his sudden passing. The world is a far less happy place without him. I am sure I shall never meet another man so talented and compassionate.

Dr. Doty was my surgeon. I had a rare surgery on my stomach in 1994 when I was 12. Before I left the hospital, he shook my hand and said (pretending to be me), "thank you Dr. Doty for saving my life." And that I truly do. He will be missed.

To the Doty Family:
I was saddened to hear the passing of Dr. Doty. He was my surgeon twice and I had just seen him last year for a different problem. He was very skilled in his profession. He was a very warm and caring doctor; not a quality some doctors possess. Dr. Doty was a very overly accomplished man; did so much and so good at what he did. He definitely left this earth much to early. His contribution to society and the medical profession will never be forgotten. I am so sorry for your loss. It is a tough road ahead for all of you. May you have comfort in knowing how wonderful he was in his profession and how much respect the community had for him. He was a great doctor and according to other tributes a wonderful person all around. Many condolescences. I am just so very saddened by this news.

To Dr. Doty's 3 Greatest Loves,
I first met Dr. Doty many years ago as I was a patient of Dr. Crane Charters for over 20 years. Because of this I was fortunate to be exposed to his exceptional warmth, and sense of humor during my many visits to his office. I became his patient over a year ago and experienced his amazng skills, personality ,and professionalism. The first question he asked me after we each said hello, was " so what part of Boston were you raised in"? I was amazed as I had been in CA. for 28 years by that time. The discussion continued as he examined me and we shared our memories of 'East Coast" culture. My diagnosis this time was favorable and as a cancer survivor the weight that was removed from my heart was instantaneous. I had complete faith in this remarkable man and never even thought of a second opinion and left him with a prayer on my lips, it is an old one " God guide his hands". My memories of over 20 years of this Angel on earth are wonderful. My deepest sympathies to all of you. The day your Husband, and Dad passed ,the earth weeped and heaven rejoiced because one of their own was coming home. In time the loving memories and the time he shared with the 3 of you will sustain you, till then may God hold you in the palm of his hand. Thank you for sharing this most wonderous man with all of us. Go with God. Maryellen Curtis

I was simply stunned this morning when i was told of Dr. Doty's passing. So much so i just could not believe my ears. I was a patient of his last year when he literally saved my life by removing a colon cancer tumor. My heart goes out to you all.

Dr Doty operated on my terminally ill brother. We were told Dr Doty was the very best. He lived 9 months after his diagnosis and we know that Dr Doty's skillfull surgery prolonged Bob's life. He was very direct with us and at times it was overwhelming. Dr Doty must have been so overwhelmed himself with having to deal with so much grief in his work. We pray he has found eternal peace. My sympathies to you all and my prayers are with you.

Vicki and I are so saddened -- and shocked -- at Jeff's passing. Jeff was one of my first trainees at UCLA and one of the first fellows to work in the lab with Vicki. My Deepest Sympathy and Condolences to Dr Doty's family.
Ten years ago I was very ill with what was thought to be pancreatic cancer. Dr Doty was my surgeon and researched deeply the situation and diagnosis before performing an 8 hour surgery to correct my problem. He would not perform the surgery until he had conferred with his Mentor and several other physicians. Eventually he and I felt comfortable enough to go for it. It turned out not to be Pancreatic Cancer and he removed necrotic tissue and performed a "Whipple". Dr Doty saved my life and I will be forever grateful to him for his expertise and caring. I was the single Mom of two teenage daughters at the time and he gave me hope and courage and my life back.
I am saddened and shocked to hear of his passing. I hope that it helps to know that he helped so many people.
May God comfort you in this trying time.

As a practising physician I knew and worked with Jeff Doty. He was indeed the model we identify with to represent what a physician should be. He aligned himself with a group of splendid surgeons who collectively provided excellent surgery for our community. Surgery is not just operating on someone, but also, importantly judgement as to when to operate...and when not to operate. His skill at surgery and at the bedside set the standard for our community. I am proud to have known him and I always realized that when Jeff consulted, my patients were getting an excellent evaluation and decision about the care they needed. My heart goes out to his family, staff, and patients who still need him.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Dr. Doty's death. His skill and expertise as a surgeon will surely be missed. I have Crohn's Disease and have known Dr. Doty since 1991. He performed 7 of my 11 surgeries, 4 of which took place in 2004. I was so sick that year and I will always remember the care he gave me in getting me through. I can honestly say that he knew me inside and out. I found it remarkable that anytime I called the office with a question I got a return call from Dr. Doty himself, an almost unheard of practice in this day and age. I always appreciated that. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family, colleagues and friends. My we always remember his smile, his skill, and his compassion in our time of need.

What an extraordinary human being he was! I pray that in time that the wonderful memories you made together as a family, friend and colleague will bring peace to your hearts.
The world has lost someone very special, what a gift he was to every life he touched!
Sincerely,
Sally DeRemer

Dr Doty will be greatly missed. He did surgery on myself and my dad and we will never forget the wonderful care he took of me. I had my stomach completely removed and Dr Doty was on the cutting edge of this type of surgery. Dad had colon cancer surgery and he took wonderful care of him. We are sorry for your loss.

Dr. Doty performed a very complicated surgery on my mother in October 2001. Without this surgery, my mother would have died. He saved her life and I and my family will always hold his memory dear to our hearts.

I am so saddened to hear of Dr. Doty's death. I was a patient of his over 4 years ago when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. He was so caring and straightforward with my husband and me. He offered to spend as much time as we needed discussing treatment options. He checked in with me a couple of times to discuss my case as it was a bit unusual. He was also the one to call and tell me I would likely need a mastectomy. He did so with grace and sensitivity. He had a wonderful sense of humor in the midst of it all. I saw him several times this past year to follow up on another lump and last saw him in August when he gave me a clean bill of health. He shared his plans to go to Valley Med and I commented that the surgeons there were fortunate to have his expertise. I was glad to be well, but a bit sad that I wouldn't see him any more. What an amazing person...I was very touched by his warmth and sweet spirit. Please accept my deepest sympathy.
