Michael McHale Obituary

Michael Martin McHale
1945 - 2018
Resident of San Jose
Marty was born to Magdalene and Martin McHale and raised in Sioux City, IA. In 1963, he came to California to attend Santa Clara University. Upon graduation in 1967, he was awarded the Nobili Medal for most outstanding student and the Kappa Zeta Phi "Man of the Year" award for unselfish service at the university. After graduation, Marty became a CPA and used accounting skills over the next 50 years, 40 of which as CFO for Raisch Company.
Marty is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Nona, and his two children, Dan, and Maggie Valentin (Jake), his daughter-in-law, Layla, his grandchildren Macy, Kylie, Piper, Braedan, Colton, Natalie, Tyler and Lilly, his brother, Patrick (Rosalie), their three children and six grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by his parents and his sister, Mary.
Marty lived a full life dedicated to his family, Catholic faith, and service. One could say Marty literally had the "keys to the kingdom" since for years he opened the doors every morning for 6:30am Mass at St. Christopher's Church. As a volunteer, Marty served as treasurer in various organizations including Serra, Christmas in the Park, Almaden Little League, Almaden Youth Soccer, Almaden Youth Basketball and Almaden Youth Softball. While he was an avid fan of the San Francisco Giants, 49ers and Notre Dame, his true love was watching his children and grandchildren play sports. On weekends and evenings, Marty volunteered to coach many of the soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball teams that his kids Dan and Maggie played on, sharing his love for sports with them. As a proud and devoted "Papa," Marty spent every weekend of the past 14 years rooting on his grandchildren from their sidelines, much to the chagrin of our favorite referees and umpires. While he may have had an occasional opinion to share with them about the game, Marty was the first one to hand the referees/umpires a cold water in between innings to make sure they didn't overheat.
Marty's life motto was be honest, stand up for what is right, pray daily and make sure your shoes are shined. His unconditional love and support will be deeply missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.
Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass on Thursday, January 11, 4:00 pm, at St. Christopher's Church, 1576 Curtner Avenue, San Jose 95125, with reception to follow in Walsh Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to San Jose Serra (an organization promoting religious vocations), 1721 Mulberry Lane, San Jose 95125, or to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org).

My thoughts and prayers are with you Nona and your family. Marty was one of my Dad's best friends (Tony McKeon). A favorite memory: my Dad took me with him to help move you to the south bay- you lived in Stockton with your mother at the time. This was probably 1970-71, so I may be a little sketchy on the details. My Dad and Marty: 2 of a kind: devout Catholics, accountants and alumni from their beloved Univ. Santa Clara. May God bless 'em both.

Nona, It was with great sadness that Julie and and I learned of Marty's passing. It has been probably 40 years since we spent time with you both and have nothing but fond memories. Marty was the consummate gentleman, always with a smile on his face and a good thing to say about everyone. He was a great friend. We will remember you Marty and your family in our prayers.

Marty was truly one of the good ones, always cheerful, positive and enthusiastic; seemingly living every minute to the fullest. He will be missed by many.

My thoughts are with his family. I was a classmate at Santa Clara and Marty was a very dynamic individual then; it doesn't sound like he every changed.
