David Marran Obituary

David F. Marran
David Francis Marran, 56, of Durham, devoted husband of Wendy (Genga) Marran, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Yale New Haven Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Greenwich, CT, son of the late John D. and Lorraine (Burton) Marran. Dave attended Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he met his future wife, Wendy. They spent nearly 40 wonderful years together and Maine always held a special place in their hearts. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Yale University. For the last 15 years, Dave was employed as the Director of Engineering for ThermoFisher Scientific in Guilford, CT. He contributed to all aspects of the company's genetic sequencers, from inception and development to manufacturing and product launch. He loved his job and was a creative and caring mentor to all. Dave was a humble and grateful man. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, kayaking, hiking, and riding his Peloton. He had a quick wit and an even quicker smile. His love of family and friends and his endless optimism sustained him throughout his life, and especially in the last three years as he battled Glioblastoma. His courage and strength continue to inspire all who knew him. His family would like to thank his teams at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and especially Gaylord Rehabilitation Hospital. Dave is survived by his wife, Wendy; cherished daughters, Sarah, Olivia, and Abigail Marran; brothers, Roger (Nadine) Marran, Kenneth (Lynn) Marran; sister, Margaret Marran; as well as many nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 1st from 4 to 7 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown. The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at 10 a.m. at Notre Dame Church in Durham. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 1080 Horse Hill Rd. in Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Gaylord Speciality Care, PO Box 400, Wallingford, CT 06492 or at https://giving.gaylord.org/give-now. Wendy and family, please accept my deepest condolences. I had the pleasure of working with Dave at Ion Torrent / Life Technologies / Thermo Fisher for many years, beginning with our early days as a startup. He was a wonderful mentor, and certainly had a positive impact on me as a young professional engineer. I learned how to do a lot of things in the lab the right way, influenced by his careful and meticulous nature. He always struck me as someone who wanted to deliver a high level of unexpected quality to the things he worked on. I think the Connecticut biotech world in recent years, and stretching beyond, has been positively shaped in part by the expanding network of people who have worked with Dave. He will be greatly missed.

My deepest condolences to the Marran family. I enjoyed a lot working with Dave at Thermo Fisher. Although our interactions were mostly online via WebEx, Dave never failed to show his dedication and truthfulness to work and his colleagues. I always looked forward to his visits at South San Francisco so we could do an in-person, 1-on-1 meeting. He was a caring and thoughtful mentor to me, and he will always have a special place in my heart.

Dave and I worked together at On-Line/MKS until 2003. He stood out as one of my favorite coworkers (technically, I think he was my superior, but it never felt that way). Primarily, though, he is one of the nicest people I have ever known. I feel so fortunate to have been friends with Dave. "Creative and caring mentor to all" is no lie. He was a fantastic person.

Wendy and family, we are so very sorry to hear the news of Dave´s passing. Prayers for you all as you go through this difficult time. We understand the nature of this beastly tumor as Chris´ dad passed from a glioblastoma 24 years ago. Hugs to you all.
