Sebastian Santacroce Obituary

Sebastian J. Santacroce
December 25, 1933 - June 3, 2022
Santacroce, Sebastian J., "Nutzie", 88, of Middletown, died peacefully June 3rd, 2022. He was born on Christmas Day in 1933 to parents Sebastiano and Lucia (Rame) Santacroce, also of Middletown, but originally from Sortino and Melilli, Sicily, respectively. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Sebastian Church and was an altar server in his youth and a member of their choir for over 60 years. After graduating from Middletown High School, he received a degree from the Hartford Institute of Accounting. Seb began a career following in his father's footsteps managing the family restaurant and bar on Court Street. Over the years he also gained skills in carpentry and built homes. He later was employed for 27 years between 1968 and 1995 at the Middletown Housing Authority, where he eventually became the Assistant Executive Director. He also served as a commissioner on the Middletown Sanitation Commission and was a member of the Housing Authority Board. He is survived by nephew, Paul Santacroce; and nieces Catherine Santacroce, Ann Marie Troy, and Julie SantaCroce; all of California. He was predeceased by brothers, Vincent and Emanual; and his 40-year companion, Carmelina "Millie" Cordone. He was an avid sports fan, loved to sing, and was well-known for helping others. Funeral services will begin with a calling hour from 9:00 – 10:00 am on Friday, June 10th, at St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church (155 Washington St., Middletown), immediately followed by the Funeral Mass and then interment at the family plot in St. Sebastian Cemetery (Route 66, Middlefield). In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Sebastian Catholic Church. Special thanks to the Rame and Casserino families and Michael and Patricia Cordone for their love and support.

I feel certain that Seb has joined the fraternity of Heavenly Angels. He was always helping others in times of need, Seb studied at the seminary and was nearly ordained. Born about a week apart from my uncle Joe, they were life long friends. When he was born, they lived upstairs at my grandparents house on Highland Ave. Seb once told me a funny story about one day my grandmother Mary drove a bunch of the kids to the shore in the old Chevy. They brought a dish of spaghetti sauce with them. On the way, the old Chevy's front wheels shimmied so much she pulled over to 'settle the car down'. A soft shoulder was apparently waiting and the car did a slow rollover onto the roof. Seb told me that except for a trombone case one of the kids brought that somehow wedged between the back of the seats, roof would have collapsed and untold injury would have happened. Noone was injured it turned out, but the spaghetti sauce spilled and Mary was hysterical until she figured out it wasn't blood. Thank you, Seb. Bless you.

A kind and gentle light has gone from this world. I will light a candle at St. Sebastian church. Dean

I remember Seb from family gatherings with the Veilleux's when I was a teenager.

I got to really know him as an adult when I worked at the Housing Authority and Seb was a Commissioner. I could always count on him for whatever help I needed.

Seb was always a gentleman with a deep faith governing him. I was blessed to know him. His Ave Maria was angelic. Truly the best I have heard so far.

Thank you Seb for all that you did to leave this world a nicer place.

More than a cousin to me.... rather more like another brother. Loved the talks we had and the time we got to spend together. I cherish those moments. I listen to your songs, few that I have, just to hear your voice. My favorites.... "He",,,, "I Believe"...Ave Maria", and of course "Danny Boy" with your buddy, Joe Pass. Even one with your niece .... There were many more songs you sang and you had a such a great voice. You were loved by all who had the privilege of knowing you. You will be missed. Rest in peace in your new heavenly home. Love you!

We lost another good one. I know Nutzie because he was a lifelong family friend of my aunt and her family. I´m so fortunate to have been included in the times they were all together whether at a birthday party, holiday, good times and bad. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. He would treat people right. He was there for my aunt and cousins and my aunt and cousins were there for him always including him in everything. He always seemed glad to see me when I walked in on a "family" gathering. I recently told him on a visit that there should be a word for friends that become family.
When he went into a convalescent facility and was lying in bed he told me "here we are. We have something in common , being the last one left of each one´s immediate family." I told him we shared many common bonds.
I let him know that having been born on Christmas Day was something special;to be born on the day God´s son was born! And truth, I told Nutzie that he certainly walked in God´s Son´s footsteps. Nutzie was a religious man, spiritual yet human and walked among us helping people along the way. Every visit I´d ask if he wanted to say a prayer. That turned into 4. His choice; The Our Father, Glory Be, and Hail Mary, and my Memorarae. We´d hold hands and pray. Don´t do that with a lot of people.
Let this be a lesson everyone. Listen to people. Nutzie told me something I never knew. Maybe some 70 years ago his mother would walk to the top of the street and meet my grandmother as she walked to the corner of Court Place and they would walk to work at the coat factory together. I could picture it and am so grateful for the story.
A week or two before Nutzie neared the end, he told me that if he got to Heaven first he´d save a place for me. I was a little stunned, but I quickly replied, and if I get to Heaven before you, I´ll save a place for you. Well, I guess he´s saving me a place. And I´m glad. It´s getting a little crowded up there.

Cousin Nootsie was in my life since my infancy and his constant presence at my father and my family's side as my father suffered through his terminal illness is something for which we owe him the deepest of thanks. He will be dearly missed.
