Dennis Moffitt Obituary

Dennis Michael Moffitt, Sr.

March 10, 1949 - January 11, 2024

Modesto, California - Big D – Dennis Moffitt, Sr.

Born Providence RI March 10, 1949, left for his heavenly mission from Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson, CA on January 11, 2024. Dennis leaves his wife of 49 years, Bonnie, his son Michael Moffitt of Wakefield RI, stepson Matthew Christianson of Modesto CA and step daughter Wendy Nelson of Quincy CA, and 15 grandchildren. Dennis was preceded in death by stepson Edward Christianson and his parents, George and Asunta (Sue) Moffitt. He leaves his sisters Mary Endicott (Modesto), Judy Van Winkle (Hugo, OK) and brother George Moffitt (Modesto CA).

Dennis attended St. Lawrence Academy in Centerdale RI, Our Lady of Fatima (Modesto) and graduated from Grace Davis High School (Modesto). He attended Fresno State, majoring in Agri Business. He Served in the Army Reserves during the Vietnam era.

Dennis opened his painting company in the early 80's, Dennis Moffitt Painting, which has continued to grow and thrive 40 years later. In 1989, Dennis moved the family to Rhode Island and the painting company was reimagined with Mike in the business starting in 2003. Mike and his wife Sarah continue to run the business in Rhode Island with Dennis' namesake still on the door. Notable project and accomplishments include many custom homes for designers and builders in Del Rio and all over the valley; St Stanislaus Church and School; Central Catholic School; the Convent and Chapel on Maze Blvd; the "Little Red Church" in Sonora; the Sunnyvale Mall and Vintage Faire Mall. He also applied specialized coatings to high rise buildings in San Francisco for Pacific Bell and painted Coit Tower. Another major feat was painting a portion of Hetch Hetchy Water Tunnel/Aqueduct in Vernalis.

Dennis was known for his wit and one liners, but he always served others throughout his lifetime, as a coach in Little League, Babe Ruth, Youth Soccer, Stockton Colts Youth Hockey, Tri Valley Youth Hockey and Nor Cal Blazers Hockey Team. He donated his painting for many years to the Decorator's Showhouse to support Community Hospice. He painted the Chapel for The Sister's of The Cross, painted the bleachers and donated painting services for the BASH auction at Central Catholic High School. Dennis served as Chairman of the Fall Festival under Father Silva at St Stanislaus Church for many years. Later in life, you could always find Dennis with his 'posse' of close friends often helping each other and others in need.

Dennis enjoyed fishing anywhere but especially fishing in Rhode Island, spending the last 10 Summers there with his youngest granddaughters. When fishing he would often loudly pray to the 'Striper Gods' to land him the big one. He enjoyed traveling the United States with Bonnie taking her wherever she wanted to go. They also traveled to Mexico, Italy, Belgium and cruised to Alaska.

Memorial Mass and Reception to follow on Tuesday January 23rd, 10:00A at St. Stanislaus Church. 709 J Street, Modesto. For any donations he would be honored to remember Sisters of The Cross 1320 Maze Blvd Modesto CA 95354 Community Hospice 4368 Spyres Way Modesto CA 95356

Deepest condolences to the entire Moffit family. Started painting with Dennis in the 90´s and a key lesson he taught me-being an Army guy-was appearance matters and is as important as your skills. I will never forget that or him.

I remember Dennis well from pre-high school days as we lived in the same neighborhood. In later years Dennis even painted my house. A gentleman and an old friend. My condolences to his family.

I first met Dennis in the late 80's while I was working at Kelly-Moore Paints. He was one of the most professional and organized contractor I have ever worked with. When he returned to California, we became friends and exchanged daily banter with each other. "Hey buzzard breath" was always his greeting to me and I will truly miss that. My deepest sympathy to the Moffitt family.

Bonnie I will never forget the first time I met Dennis at Chiefs of New York restaurant when George and I first started dating. George was a little worried about what Dennis might say to me since we had never met and I was newly dating his little brother. The first words out of his mouth were
What the hell are your intentions with my brother?
I reassured him they were all good. Dennis welcomed me into the family and I very much grew to love him as a brother. I will miss you Dennis and I look forward to the day I will see you again in heaven. You will be greatly missed. Your sister by marriage,

Mr. Moffitt was a bigger than life figure. Always kind and supportive. I met his son Mike when they moved to RI and immediately became the annoying kid showing up for dinner at my new friend´s home.

Mr. Moffitt and Bonnie always made me feel welcome, and Mike became one of my closest friends. The memories of those times are forever cherished in my heart.

Bonnie, Mike and family, I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
