James Mower Obituary

JAMES PATRICK MOWER MARCH 17, 1926 - JAN. 23, 2007 James Patrick Mower, known as Pat to many that knew him, was born on Saint Patrick's Day 1926 in Fairview, Utah. As a young boy he moved with his parents and his brother to Oakland, California. He attended the University of California at Berkley and received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. During WWII he served his country by enlisting in the Merchant Marines where he spent most of his time in the South Pacific. Next on the horizon was Harvard Law School where he received his law degree in 1952. Upon graduating from law school he took a position with a local law firm. Soon after, he opened his own office in which he successfully practiced for over 50 years.

Pat is survived by his wife, Karen Mower and five children, Diane Mower Stephens of Modesto, Deborah Mower Heller of Silver City, NM, John Mower of San Diego, Kristin Mower Johnson of Lehi, UT, and James Mower of Modesto. He also leaves three grandchildren, Kira Stephens of Modesto, Garrett Stephens of San Diego and Matisyn Johnson of Lehi, UT.

Pat was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 7th Ward where he served in a variety of capacities. He never really retired but eventually began spending more and more time with his family. He especially enjoyed his time in his Park City, UT condo playing with his newest grandchild. Pat was known for many things, including his great sense of humor, his ability to connect with others, and above all, his love for his family. He will be missed by all that knew him.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 30 at 11:00 AM at the LDS Chapel located at 800 Sylvan Ave in Modesto. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral service between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

Contributions may be made to the LDS Church 7th Ward in care of Bishop Darral L. Hiatt, 3220 Lakeshore Ct., Modesto, 95355 or the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038-1132.

We were priviledged to meet Pat as our neighbor when we first came to Modesto. He was a great person, we always enjoyed his company and will miss him dearly.

Pat was one of my special cousins while we were growing up. We got separated by WWII and while raising families but kept in touch through family members. I just thought he'd always be there and we could get together again anytime. I'll miss him!

I met Mr. Mower, when I started working for Mr. Herman in 2001. He was always kind and always had a nice thing to say. He would stop by our office to say hi [we worked on the same floor]. You will be greatly missed!!

Pat,
If it wasn't for you, I would never have thought about becoming a lawyer. After graduating from Davis High school in 1964, you provided guidance as I struggled through my early marriage. You became our family trusted friend and legal counselor. We remained close friends throughout the years as I went through college, law school and then moved on to a career in Washington, D.C. Whenever I came home to visit my family, I always called you and we shared fond memories and laughed alot about how you introduced my Dad to "that other woman" after his divorce from my Mom. In fact, you handled all the Campos family divorces. I had one and I think my brother, Stephen had two. After seeing your quick wit and legal prowess in the courtroom, you inspired me to become a divorce lawyer. I would have become one if I hadn't accepted that job offer to work in the Federal government. Thank you for all the laughs, your inspiration and helping me through difficult times. I will always remember you. My heartfelt thanks to you. My sympathy goes out to Karen and your family.
Rest in Peace my friend,
Roger A. Campos

I only knew Mr. Mower for a short time, but he caught my heart right away. He called me his "Allcare girl". I was saddened and shocked by his leaving us. He will be greatly missed. Debi Marks

Dear Karen and family,

Pat will be greatly missed and I am so sorry for your loss. I know that Pat left you with many fond and sweet memories. We will miss him at church. Ever since we joined the church in '98 he has been one of those stalwart members, you expected to see every Sunday. He always had a ready smile and hearty handshake! God Bless! Love in Christ,

We were all saddened to hear Pat had died. My father was one of Pat's first clients back in 1953. He tried to help Dad gain custody of my brother and me. Even though he was the better parent, fathers rarely won custody cases in the early fifties (especially 2 and 3 year old children), and as a result Pat and Dad lost the case. Dad recognized Pat's dedication and loyalty to him, and he retained Pat as the Dutra family attorney thereafter.

My father is 94 years old and plans to attend Pat's service on Tuesday. He said he wouldn't miss it for the world.

Another connection for me years later, was the awesome opportunity I had to get to know Etta, Pat's mother. I loved her dearly and knew that her influence helped make Pat the person he was. Both are dearly missed. My heartfelt condolences go to his family.

We were saddened to hear of this news. However, Brother Mower did live a long and useful life. We are grateful that we knew him and his cheerful demeanor. May his family be comforted that he is in a better place. The sad part is that he is not with us for now.

To the Mower family, my deepest sympathies. As a law student I clerked for Pat, and for the last three and a half years of my 32 year law practice we shared office space in the Reed Center. He will always be remembered as a great lawyer and a very good friend.
