Michael Bacich Obituary

Michael George Bacich

April 11, 1936 - July 19, 2024

Modesto, California - Michael George "Smokey" Bacich, born on April 11, 1936, passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 88 in Modesto, CA. He was born in Minnesota and eventually moved to California. Known for his intelligence, sharp wit, and kind nature, Michael touched the lives of many with his kind heart and readiness to lend a helping hand.

Michael proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean war, achieving the rank of sergeant and receiving an honorable discharge for his dedicated service. His commitment to community continued long after his military service as he worked variously as a salesman, a member of the Modesto Police Reserve, and a truck driver.

He attended Saint Joan of Arc Elementary School and later, after military service, studied for two years at Marquette University. Beyond his military life, Michael was baptized Catholic and was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church.

His personal life was rich with family and love. He is survived by his sister, Cecilia Antoinette "Tootie," brother, Henry Oliver "Hank," sons, Christopher (Rhonda), Bradley, Michael (Suzette), and daughters, Amy (Ralph) and Patricia. He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony Raymond (Tony), son, Steven, daughter, Cynthia, his first wife and mother of his children, Patricia, and his second wife, Dorothy. He was a grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a great-grandfather of 7.

Michael's hobbies included racing go-carts, riding motorcycles, fishing and camping with his children, woodworking, all activities that brought him joy and relaxation. In his later years he became a NASCAR fan, attending races and regularly watching them on TV with his adored partner, Nelvie Allen. Her daughters Fran and Dot, along with their families, were a blessing to him and brought him great joy.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at Salas Brothers Funeral Home on Friday, August 2, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. with burial at Acacia Memorial Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 4368 Spyers Way, Modesto, CA, 95350, honoring Michael's compassionate spirit.
