Richard Erler Obituary

Richard Hans Erler
May 27, 1936 - June 28, 2018
Richard (Dick) Hans Erler, 82, passed away on June 28, 2018 at his home in Riverbank, California. Richard was born May 27, 1936 in Berlin, Germany to Richard and Gertrude Erler. As a young boy, his family emigrated to the United States, and he was raised in San Francisco.
After graduating from high school, Richard served in the U.S. Navy, and later attended San Jose State University. As a Spartan, Richard excelled on the gridiron, earning All-American Honors as an Offensive Lineman in 1960. His NFL career was cut short by injury and he turned his attention to coaching and educating high school students. "Mr. Erler" was a favorite teacher for almost 30 years at Davis High School in Modesto, California where he taught health classes while coaching football, wrestling, and soccer. Richard loved life, and rarely sat still, working out at his beloved S.O.S. Club, taking pride in the beauty of his yard and gardens, and restoring his 1953 Chevy pickup truck. He had a big heart and was a loyal friend to many throughout his life. He never lost his love for football, following San Jose State and the San Francisco 49ers almost religiously.
Prior to his untimely death, Richard was married to the love of his life, Heide for nearly 35 years. They enjoyed their time together, visiting family and bowling with friends in Modesto and Riverbank. His greatest pride and joy was his two daughters, Kristi and Ame, who he loved with all of his heart. In his later years, Richard found great joy in Facetime and loved talking to his daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchild.
Richard is survived by his wife Heide, and daughters Kristi Erler Treadway (Gordon) and Ame Erler Patton (John) and Heide's daughter, Sandra Tobin (Hugh). He took great pride in his grandchildren, Brandon Treadway, Benjamin Treadway, Brian Treadway, Killian Patton, Sean Tobin and Jenna Tobin. His first great-grandchild, Violet Rey Treadway, was born earlier this year.
A memorial to remember and celebrate Richard's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 28th at Shelter Cove located at 4242 Coffee Road, Modesto, CA 95357. Private Internment is at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Erler. He was my soccer coach at Davis High School. I have seen him throughout the years and he always had a kind word and a memory of high school to share. I will miss seeing him around Modesto.

Dick Erler along with Dan Gonsalves are two of the 3 cornerstones of my life. They taught me perseverance, toughness, fortitude and believing in oneself. Thank you Mr. Erler for your contribution to so many of us. God Bless you.

Mr. Erler was my coach when I was a sophomore at Davis High School in Modesto. He was always a fair guy and treated all his students with respect.
