Arlas Carl Rustand was born on April 7, 1936, on a farm in Roberts County, one mile northeast of Peever, the son of Anton Wilhelm and Rosie Belle (Swayze) Rustand. He was baptized and confirmed at Peever Lutheran Church and attended Peever High School where he participated in basketball and track. Bud aspired to work for the railroad and began working on the "bolt gang" track repair crew during the summer after his junior year in 1953. He loved the job so much he almost didn't return to high school but he was convinced to complete his education and graduated from Peever High School in 1954. He continued working on the railroad and in 1956, became a brakeman for Milwaukee Road. In 1958, Bud learned of an opening for a conductor in Montevideo, applied for the position and got the job. Shortly after, he received his draft papers and served in the U.S. Army from April 9, 1959, to March 27, 1961. Upon returning to his job, he spent more time in Montevideo, where he eventually met Patricia Winters. Bud and Pat were married on August 23, 1972, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Montevideo and together they had two sons. Bud continued working with Milwaukee Road which later became Burlington Northern until his retirement in June 1983.
In his early years, Bud enjoyed hunting, water skiing, fishing, and he tended to a garden and fruit trees. In retirement, he loved watching the Minnesota Timberwolves, taking trips to the casino, and playing cards with friends and family. Bud will always be remembered for his quiet demeanor, strong work ethic, and sense of humor.
Bud is survived by his two sons, William "Bill" (Lisa) Rustand and their daughter Ella of Las Vegas, Nev., and Mark (Toni Lynn) Rustand and their daughters Ashlyn and Ember of Madison, S.D.; two sisters, Arvilla Schaub of Sanbornville, N.H., and Illa Matheson of Murrieta, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Patricia; and two sisters, Wilma Szabo and Donna Hess.
