Carl Coone Obituary

Carl Webster Coone

November 22, 1927 - January 13, 2025

Carl Webster Coone of Mooresville, age 97, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 13, 2025. Carl was born in Cornelius NC on November 22, 1927, to the late Roy Webster Coone and Ethney Josephine Sweet Coone.

He graduated from Landis High School and from Durham (NC) Institute of Barbering. In 1949, he married his sweetheart, Betty Jean Moon. After brief residences in Baltimore MD and Durham NC, they settled in Mooresville and enjoyed 73 years of marriage together.

Carl was the owner of The Trend Barber Shop and broke barriers by hiring the first female barber in Mooresville. He was an expert gardener and an avid hunter and fisherman. He spent most of his free time outdoors, often with his son-in-law Bruce. He was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church where he was active as a deacon and in choirs, the XYZs, the church garden, men's mission group, and Sunday School. He shared many colorful stories of his early life on the farm, plowing with mules, milking the cows, hunting rabbits, harvesting cotton, and driving the school bus. In retirement, Carl and Betty visited all fifty states and many National Parks. He collected rocks wherever they went. He and Betty laughed and ate lots of dessert with their dominoes club. Carl played the harmonica, liked to dance, and had a beautiful tenor voice. Carl was affectionately called Daddy-D by all his grandchildren. He loved his family without reservation and worked hard to provide the best life for his daughters and Betty. He was a blue-eyed, peace-loving, even-tempered, gentle, happy man who always had a smile and a hug or handshake ready.

Carl is survived by his daughters, Debra Kolkebeck (Bruce) of Salisbury NC, and Crystal Armstrong (Ivan) of Greenville SC; grandchildren, Kurtis Kolkebeck (Kelee); and great-granddaughter, Emmalee of Mt Ulla NC, Evan Kolkebeck of Mauldin SC, Elliot Dickerson (Mark Tufano) of Sterling VA, and Kate Dickerson (Jake Lawson) of Sterling VA.

Carl was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty; his parents, Roy and Ethney Coone; his brother, Albert Coone; and his sisters, Ruth Freeze, Pearl Burkette, and Alice Jones.

Arrangements: A memorial service for Carl will be held at Mooresville First Baptist Church, 150 South Church St, Mooresville NC on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 2 p.m. with Reverend B.J. Dillard officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Interment will be a private event for immediate family at Glenwood Memorial Park Columbarium in Mooresville.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mooresville First Baptist Church, 150 South Church St., Mooresville NC 28115, or to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville NC 28625.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of JenLei's LLC, especially Ron "Jay" Eckles Jr and Kenda Smith, for their love and care that made it possible for Carl to enjoy his last years comfortably at home. We also extend heartfelt thanks to the team at Hospice of Iredell Count for making this journey more peaceful for Carl and our family.
