James Sharp Obituary

James Douglas Sharp, 68, passed away March 29, 2014, at the Pioneer Community Hospital in Scott County with family and special friends by his side. He had been battling cancer since January 2012. Doug accepted Christ as his savior on Jan. 12, 1969 and was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Oneida.
The youngest of eleven children, he was born Feb. 21, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.J. and Erie West Sharp; brothers and sister-in-laws, Jake and Dolores and Joe and Alene Sharp; sisters and brother-in-laws, Jean and Wesley Riggins, Liz and Vernon West, Joyce Loy and Joe Purcell.
Survivors include his wife of forty-six years, Linda Jeffers; one son, Jackson and wife Dee-Dee Wilson of Huntsville; one daughter, Delenia and husband Brandon Wray of Nevada; three grand-daughters; Myah Sharp, Kyra and Arabelle Wray; one grandson, Alex Wray;Êone brother, Roger and wife Shirley of Oak Ridge; three sisters, Nancy and husband Bill Johnson of Jamestown, Judy Purcell of Huntsville and Helen Smith of Oak Ridge; a very special nephew, Deny Moyer.
After graduating from Huntsville High in 1964, he attended Cumberland College where he received a BS degree in elementary and physical education. Later, he attended Tennessee Tech where he received two advanced degrees. Doug worked in education as a teacher, coach, or administrator for forty-two years. His coaching career included either coaching or assisting many sports: football, basketball, baseball, softball, cross-country, track, soccer, and tennis. The NinetyÐEighth General Assembly honored Coach Sharp and the 1992-93 Scott High Girls' Basketball team for winning the district title, setting a school record for the most points scored in a game, 98, and setting a second school record for the highest average number of points per game, 68.5. He was selected District Coach of the year in 1994 and still holds the record as the coach with the most wins for girls' basketball at Scott High School, 176.
The family will receive friends at the First United Methodist Church in Oneida on Wednesday, April 2, 2014 from 5 p.m. until time of the memorial celebration of life service at 8 p.m. with brother Kyle Keeton and Keith Knight officiating. His entombment service will be conducted on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Carson Memorial Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Food Bank, 234 N. Main St., P.O. Box 4445, Oneida, TN 37841.
Serving as pallbearers will be his nephews, Chuck and Tim West, Derek and Ryan Keeton, Chris Purcell and Warner Riggins. Honorary pallbearers will be those he coached and worked with.
