Daniel Webster "Coot" Evans Jr. MORGANTON Mr. Daniel Webster "Coot" Evans, Jr., 86, of 200 Bouchelle St., Morganton, transitioned from this life Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Charles George VA Medical Hospital, in Asheville, following a short period of sickness. Born Feb. 6, 1925, in Burke County, to the late Daniel Webster Evans, Sr., and the late Amelia Flack Evans. In addition to his parents, brothers, Carl Wilson Evans, Sr.; brothers-in-law, Forney Happoldt, Sr., and Allen B. Garrison; half sister, Ruth Curruthers; and sister-in-law, Josephine Carpenter, preceded him in death. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a graduate of Johnson C. Smith University. He was a member of Slades Chapel AME Zion Church. He retired from employment with N.C. Correctional Institute where he served as a guard and correctional officer. He previously worked for McDowell Public Schools, Avery County Public Schools, Esseloa Lodge, in Linville, Pinehurst County Club, City of Morganton Parks and Recreation, Mimosa Golf, Highlander Corp., and Lazarus. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Parona Garrison Evans, of the home; son, Daniel "Wheat" Webster Evans, III, of Morganton; sister, Maxine Happoldt, of Morganton; grandchildren, Darrin (Carla) Evans, of Roanoke, Va.; Danielle "TT" Evans, of Morganton; great-grand-children, Tyler Evans and Jevon Evans; half sister, Mary Lou Hunt, of Washington, D.C.; sisters-in-law, Fannie Garrison, of Greensboro, and Juanita Lytle, of Morganton; and a host of other relatives and cherished friends. Funeral services are scheduled to be held Friday, Jan. 11, at 3 p.m. at Slades Chapel AME Zion Church with the Revs. Dr. James McDougald, PE, Tommy Carpenter, W.F. McIntosh, Jr., and Dr. Jasper Hemphill, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:55 p.m. at the church, prior to services. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
