Bobby Joe Cox
06/01/1934 - 01/28/2025
Bobby Joe Cox of Midland, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home on January 28th, 2025, with his good friends and his good dog, Sugar, by his side. He was 90 years old.
Bobby Joe was born on June 1, 1934. He was raised by his grandparents with his cousin and spent most of his childhood in the McKinney area. His love of people and animals began with the work and care he learned on his grandparents' farm.
Bobby Joe married his devoted wife Joan in Fort Worth in 1953. They were married for over 67 years, until her death in 2021. He loved to travel with Joan, and they managed to visit every Major League Baseball stadium in the nation. They were known for their generosity and kindness to anyone they came across who was in need. Together they raised three children.
Bobby Joe did a lot of living in his 90 years. He joined the Navy Reserves as a young man. He served as a missionary in Arkansas with Joan, working in a boys' home. He rode bulls for a short while, until he promised his worried grandmother he would stop. He eventually moved west and began to work in the oil industry. Bobby Joe was well-respected in the West Texas oil fields, working with Shell Oil, Watson Packer and other companies before starting a consulting business with his wife. He was an excellent salesman and took the time to get to know people. He served as a mentor to many, freely offering his wisdom, knowledge, and possibly a nickname to anyone.
Bobby Joe loved to tell stories, and it was easy to listen to him, with his charming humor and distinctive, deep voice. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking and became an avid collector of guns and knives. He loved animals, small and large, dogs and cats. He especially loved birds and raised doves. Bobby Joe preferred to be outdoors and took joy in taking his Australian Shepherd, Sugar, for walks to herd the ducks at the park. One day, she took off into the pond after a turtle, and emerged covered in moss, making Bobby Joe smile and laugh, knowing he had a new story to tell.
His house was known for always having visitors, because Bobby Joe loved people. Old friends, clients, young engineers, neighbors, and family would often stop by for a visit. He was a people person, and his home was open to everyone. He was so thankful for the friends and neighbors who looked after him in his later years, particularly Gwendolyn Lovan, Alex Gonzales and wife Maria, and their two girls, Alexis and Me-a, Chris Cato and family, and Kevin Sipes and wife, Nancy. He was also very thankful for the care he received through Faithful Journey Home Care and Hospice of Midland.
Bobby Joe is survived by many family members, including his children, Bliss McCall and her husband J.O., Blake Cox and his wife Donna, and April Howard and her husband Les, his grandchildren, Clare Newton, Byron Reynolds, Chase Cox, Spencer Cox, Tim Howard, and Katelyn Howard as well as many great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Joan, his parents, grandparents, and his grandson, Tristan Cox.
