Marcus Paul "Marc" Canty

BUTTE - Mr. Marcus Paul "Marc" Canty passed away Saturday, July 2, 2022 in St. Vincent Hospital in Billings after having a massive stroke on June 8, 2022 in Butte. He was born in Butte, Wednesday, July 15, 1942 to Dr. Charles and Lilyan (McCanna) Canty. He attended St. Patrick Grade School and graduated from Boy's Central in 1960 and served as an altar boy throughout his catholic education. He was also a newspaper carrier for eight years. He successfully attended Montana State University in Bozeman taking time out for services in the US Army. He earned his degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Technology.
Marc married Mary Ann Shugrue in St. Lawrence Catholic Church on June 25, 1966 and served his country in the United States Army.
When Marc was young, he worked summers in high school and later in college for Torger Oaas at the Montana Pole Plant. After he finished his time at MUS, he went to work in Toledo, Ohio for six months then in Memphis Tennessee for five years for the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company in their Memphis engineering department on President Island.
He and Mary Ann returned to Butte where he worked in the engineering department of Montana Power Company for 28 years and would jog or swim at the YMCA most every day on his lunch hour. He later drove truck for the Anaconda Company in the summers.
Marc enjoyed spending time with his little family and his beloved dogs and cats, camping, biking and fishing on Montana's lakes, Georgetown Lake and the Big Hole River. He also lovingly supported his wife and daughters music careers. He enjoyed mechanics with his son Marc Stephen and cross country as well as down hill skiing and skating with the whole family.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Shugrue) Canty; son, Marc Stephen Canty and daughter, Maria Theresa Craft Canty all of Butte; his sister, Sister Patricia Canty SCL of Levenworth, Kansas; brother, Dr. Charlie (Ralene) Canty of Butte and brother, Edward P. (Joanne) Canty of East Helena.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and his in-laws: Steve M. Shugrue and Mae (Mullenhouse) Harrington; son-in-law, Grant Craft; brother-in-law, Stephen J. Shugrue; uncle, Marcus E. McCanna; former sister-in-law, Colleen Mack Canty and aunt and uncle: Walter and Juliene (McCanna) Lewis.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at 11 AM in Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 10 o'clock that morning. Interment of ashes will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery.
