GEORGE BENKO
AGE: 89 WOODBRIDGE
George M. Benko, M.D., 89, died at home on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008.
Born in Perth Amboy, Dr. Benko lived in Woodbridge for the past 55 years.
Dr. Benko graduated from Ohio University and the University of Cincinnati Medical School. He defended our country as an officer in the Navy, stationed at Norfolk, Va., during WWII. He practiced medicine in Perth Amboy until the Navy invited him to accept a promotion to the post of Flight Surgeon, based in Pensacola, Fla., for the Korean War. This invitation gave him the most exciting and fondly remembered days of his life.
After Korea, Dr. Benko practiced Industrial medicine at Exxon's Bayway Refinery in Linden. He pioneered the field of bio engineering with research into high fidelity electrocardiography and electroencephalography. He presented his findings at the IEEE's Northeast Bio engineering Conference in 1997. Implementation proposal: http://www.improvlogic.com/swf/words/tek/hifiekg.swf. He also pioneered the field of Biomedical photography, winning the Leica Camera Company's Oscar Barnack Medal in 1949.
Dr. Benko was predeceased by a brother, John Benko, and two sisters, Margaret Clark and Anna Granat.
He is survived by his wife, Stasya V. Benko; two sons, Michael E. Benko and Karl J. Benko; a daughter, Patricia R. Brown; three grandchildren, Vera Brown, Jonathan Brown, and Regina Torres, and two great-grandchildren, Brighton and Tiana.
The Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown will host his funeral and interment at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Arrangements are by Leon J. Gerity Funeral Home, 411 Amboy Ave, Woodbridge.
