Joel Levy Obituary

Joel Sidney Levy

AGE: 66 • Bridgewater

Joel Sidney Levy, 66, died suddenly, on Sunday, May 1 of an apparent cardiac arrest. Mr. Levy was born in Baldwin, New York to Madeline (Dooreck) and Philip Levy on January 27, 1945. He attended Baldwin High School , New York Culinary Institute as well as the American Academy of the Performing Arts. Mr. Levy served in the US Army during the Vietnam War and became the personal chef for General Moroon who at that time was the commander of Seato. Following his military service, Mr. Levy was the head chef at The Maidstone Arms in East Hampton, NY as well as the Hedges Restaurant in East Hampton. He was the prodigy of the noted culinary artist, Michael Fields and worked closely with Michael, Julia Childs, John Clancy and Craig Clayborne to develop the Time Life Cookbook Series. Mr. Levy was well known as a fine musician and his instrument of choice was the trumpet and the pocket trumpet. He was ranked as one of the top 20 chefs by the NY Times as well as being the chef and co-owner of Corianders in NYC, which received many accolades, including 4 stars from the New York Times Food Review. Eventually, Mr. Levy moved to Port Townsend, Washington and established a spice company called "DUCK CREEK QUACKER AND SPICE COMPANY." Through this company, Mr. Levy created a blended seasoning called "Hometown # 1" which became very well known in the markets throughout the Northwest. He would say "without Hometown, it was just food." He was well known in the Seattle area as a singer and musician.

Mr. Levy is survived by his two brothers, Raymond Levy and Bertram Levy, his sister-in-laws, Harriet Levy and Roberta Levy, his 3 nephew, Michael Levy, Matthew Levy, Adam Levy and his niece, Madeline Levy.

I can still see him and hear his voice in my mind's eye. Like picturing him at the Upstage making magic for us all. Gone too soon.

Joel, you are just the best. I loved doing demos with you in the T&C Stores. Your warm personality and humor were always a hit, and drew crowds. You can make people smile-I'm one of them. I'll miss you terribly. Mark Merrill-Beefalo Meats

I was saddened to learn of Joel's passing. He was a wonderful guy to have on the bandstand. I'll never forget his sense of humor and his willingness to play at any time and for any occasion. The guy had chops to spare. We are all diminished by his passing.

Joel was someone I only knew from a distance. Whenever I saw him perform in Port Townsend I could always see vibrant light behind him. I could hear the many layers of conversation embedded in any instrument he played..voice, horn, keyboard. It was not until I read the lovingly composed obituary in the PT Leader that I became aware of his rich and colorful history. To those of you who loved and lived with him I am so very sorry for your loss. I wish I could have been so blessed to have known him better.

I very much enjoyed playing with Joel at a club in Port Townsend the night before his untimely passing. He was a beautiful musician, both as singer and cornetist with a very broad knowledge of and appreciation for jazz and American standards. Beyond that he was a great person who made you feel good about yourself. He will be missed very much.

Huge loss for all of us. Joel was a great friend to all who crossed his path. My daughter worked at the Upstage in Port Townsend while in college, and Joel was her favorite. He never forgot a name or a person, always kind and generous. Susan Solley
