To the Nelson family - we go back to the days when Sister Lola Irby and Sister Eval Nelson were church sisters at the Refuge Church of Christ in Jerseyland. The wonderful memories of that church family!
I have not seen Robert for many years, but from reading the wonderful entries in this guest book he remained the same. He possessed good leadership skills and had a niche for making those around him laugh; he was fun, smart and a great person to have on your team/side. I am sure he is smiling as he joins his mother, Sister Eval in heaven.
Those who know the words of pray, please join me in praying for the deep void this family must be feeling. Robert is in good hands; he is safe in our Saviors arms!
With deepest sympathy!

Robert Nelson... My friend... I don't even know where to begin, since our friendship spans over many years. I know that Fourth Street will NEVER be the same... I will never be able to cook Mexican Cornbread or another sweet potato pie and not think of you... I love you, and am honored to call you my friend... You were a 'good' friend to know, and have. Rest my brother, and look in on baby Malcolm, give him a kiss from his mommy, until I get to see all of you again... I will also miss the 'good' card games... My condolences, to the entire Nelson family, and especially Robert's children, and grandchildren. Robert was the glue that held the family together... God bless you all...

My deepest sympathies to the family of Robert Nelson, one of my brightest students, gone much to soon. He challenged to conventional and taught those who were his teachers. He was that offspring of an intelligent and wise mother, Eval Nelson. Now two very special people missing from this earth.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Nelson (Robert) during the early '90s with the Police/Community Partnership Program, specifically the COP and Safe Haven Programs. Robert served on our Steering Committee and always made sure we served the community first. He was a great inspiration to the kids and will be missed on West Fourth Street, where he held court as its "Mayor." G-d Bless You.

To the Nelson family you have our deepestd sympathy. Robert always with his kind smile and careing words to all. This poem is who he was.

LET ME GIVE

I do not know how long I'll live
but while I live, Lord, let me give
some comfort to someone in need
by smile or nod, kind word or deed.

And let me do what ever I can
to ease things for my fellow man.
I want naught but to do my part
to try to "lift" a tired or weary heart.

To change folks' frowns to smiles again.
Then I will not have lived in vain
and I'll not care how long I'll live
If I can give ... and give ... and give.
