S. MacArthur Obituary

S. Hayes MacArthur Jr.

Branchburg - 71, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2021.Hayes was born to the late parents S. Hayes MacArthur Sr. (Mac) and Phyllis MacArthur. He was born in Plainfield and grew up in Bridgewater, before moving to Branchburg in 1970, where he spent the remainder of his life. Hayes graduated from Rider University in 1972 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business. He was proud to be a member of the fraternity Phi Kappa Psi. In 1955, Mac started the family business; MacArthur Appliances in Somerville. Hayes Jr. became co-owner of the business in 1974. He worked along side his brother Craig for over 30 years after making the decision to retire in 2009. Hayes was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing frequently, especially with his family members. He was a former member of Raritan Valley Country Club and the USGA. Hayes had a profound love for baseball and softball, which he played for many years of his life. In June of 2019, he fulfilled his ultimate lifelong dream by visiting Wrigley Field for the first time with his son, Hayes III, to watch his favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, play at home and win. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, and was a member of the NRA. He also had a deep love for the Christmas season. Most of all, Hayes loved going to Chebeague Island, Maine where he enjoyed golfing and spending time with family. Hayes will be deeply missed by his family and his many dear friends.

Surviving are his loving wife of 27 years, Ruth MacArthur, sons Hayes III and wife Lauren MacArthur, Cory MacArthur, daughters Kelly and Kirsten MacArthur, sister Karen and husband Lou Spanner, brother Craig and wife Judy MacArthur, sister-in-law Alberta and husband Anthony Terzino, grandchildren Ella, Sophia, Hayes IV, and Danica MacArthur, nieces and nephews Ami (Spanner) Payne, Mark Spanner, David MacArthur, Shannon (MacArthur) Allocco, Lisa (Terzino) Dyer, and Lauren (Terzino) Coddington, great nieces Ashlyn and Amanda Payne and Autumn Spanner, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

I think of Hayes every time I hit balls at the golf range on Rt. 22 in Branchburg...every time. Blessings and Light, Hayes.

I knew Hayes for many years as a result of our interactions at the range. We often had very easygoing conversations about almost any topic and indeed became good friends in a very true sense. We never exchanged phone numbers, however we only played together once on a course as a result of being paired up at Spooky Brook, but there was always a tacit understanding that we would always soon see each other again “at the range” for another one of our very enjoyable practice and gab sessions...most often more gab than practice. Hayes was a very warm and giving person. I’ll never forget one particular example of his big heart. One day we were hitting balls and he noticed me hitting a bunch of nice baby draws with my 5-hybrid club. He then stopped and asked me if I could give him some tips as to how to hit draws. I should strongly state that Hayes was a FAR, FAR better player than me...probably around a 5 handicap or a little less at times...and he hit the most beautiful, repeatable slight fades you’d ever want to see. He was truly a “golfing machine.” But the fact that he asked a hacker like me for some advice just showed how he was trying to connect in a friendly way. That gracious gesture really stuck with me. I’m very sad that I will no longer see him “at the range” and will miss him very much. I miss him already.

The MacArthur family was pivotal in helping me start my professional career. I worked at their appliance store in the early 80s. It was always a warm and friendly environment. I remember Hayes as being particularly cheerful. Thank you Hayes, I wish I got to know you better.

Hayes will be missed by his many friends. I remember when he and his brother Craig ran the appliance store in Somerville and interacted with my husband Roger who founded Sieberg Appliance. Every year Hayes played in the Chamber Golf Outing, many of which I ran. Roger and I send our condolences to the family.

So sorry to hear of Hayes passing. We were competitors in softball with MacArthurs vrs. McLachlan! Many years later young Hayes played with us.
For over 20 years I played with Hayes in the Chamber Golf Tournament. Always had fun and enjoyed our conversations. Great guy!
I will miss him. RIP
