Rev. Lonnie T. Johnson, 81, went to heaven Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Conway Medical Center. Born October 3, 1932 in Conway, SC, he was the son of the late Ervin Grant Johnson and Effie Brown Johnson. Rev. Johnson is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Dale Powell Johnson, a son, Lonnie Dean Johnson (Debbie), and two daughters, Donya Johnson Fickling (Monty), and Melissa Johnson Clark (Eddie). He loved and enjoyed his 9 grandchildren, Lauren, Lindsay and Leah Johnson, Emily Ramsey Cannon (Josh), Jessica and Daniel Ramsey, Christopher, Brooke and Brittany Clark. Also surviving are 4 sisters and brothers-in-law, Carrie Murdock (Hugh, deceased), Rose Bunch (Alvin), Magdalene Fogner (Robert) and Helen Parker (Joseph), 3 brothers and sisters-in-law, Grant Johnson (Hilda), David Johnson (Glenda), and Moses Johnson as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan and his sister and brother-in-law Belle Tyler (Don).
Rev. Johnson was a Korean War Veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force during 1951-1955. A business career followed at Ocean City Life Insurance Company, Myrtle Beach, SC. An entrepreneur at heart, he also started several commercial businesses ranging from a garden center to real estate. Certificate of License to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ was granted in 1976 by Juniper Bay Baptist Church, Conway, SC. Rev. Johnson subsequently pursued and received a Bachelor of Divinity from Luther Rice Seminary, Jacksonville, FL. As a bi-vocational pastor, "Preacher Lonnie" served 5 churches during his 33 years of ministry, including Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Hemingway, SC, Sweet Home Baptist Church, Longs, SC, Lake Swamp Baptist Church, Loris, SC, Mt. Leon Baptist Church, Longs, SC and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Conway, SC.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially working the land with his tractors and fishing. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday January 10, 2014 at Johnson Funeral Home in Aynor, SC. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Juniper Bay Baptist Church, Conway, SC with Pastor James Way officiating, followed by interment in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Juniper Bay Baptist Church, 5275 Juniper Bay Road Conway, SC 29527. Rev. Johnson and his family are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home of 290 9th Ave. Aynor.
