Died: August 18, 2025 in Ottawa, IL
Chester "Chet" Gapski, 93, of Oglesby passed away, August 18, 2025 at OSF St. Elizabeth Hospital, Ottawa.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 23, 2025 at Prey-Mueller Funeral Home, Oglesby with Rev. Paul Carlson, pastor of Holy Family Church, officiating. Burial to follow in Oakwood Cemetery, LaSalle with full military rites conducted by the Peru Veterans Memorial Group. Visitation will be 9:00 AM to time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Gapski was born on July 7, 1932 in Peru to Louis Sr. and Josephine (Stemlau) Gapski. He graduated from LaSalle-Peru Township High School in 1951. He married Norma Jean Selke on July 12, 1952 at St, Valentine's Church in Peru. She passed away on August 22, 2021. He served in the United States Army from 1952-1954 and served in the Korean War. He loved bowling, playing cards; poker and euchre, word search books and watching football.
Chester was a resident at Illinois Veterans Home, LaSalle where he became a "poppy" champion maker and was very lucky at playing bingo. He was a lifetime member of both Oglesby VFW and American Legion and a member of Holy Family Church in Oglesby.
Chester worked at Weberling Bakery, Westclox, Marquette Cement and Illinois Cement where he retired as lead man in the electrical department in 1998.
Survivors include; two daughters, Wanda (William) Blossy of Milwaukee, WI and Leann (Mike) West of Spring Valley; three grandchildren, Jason West of Spring Valley, Maria (Brian) Zinsmann Ogden, UT, Heidi (Brian) Harrison of Oak Creek, WI; five great-grandchildren; Avery Zinsmann, Barrett Zinsmann of Ogden, UT, Corbin West of Spring Valley and twins Georgia and Willa Harrison of Oak Creek, WI and many neices and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Bill Blossy, Brian Harrison, Mike West, Jason West, Earl Barnickel and Bill King.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Norma Jean, brothers , sisters and brother-in-laws.
Donations may be directed to the donors choice.
