A. Emery Howarth passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 30, 1928, in South Berwick, Maine, Emery was the son of the late Wilfred and Rose (Theoret) Howarth. He attended school locally but chose to leave early to serve his country honorably in the United States Navy. Following his service, he returned to complete his education and began his career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he retired after many dedicated years as a Design Draftsman.
Emery was happiest when he was outdoors-whether hunting, fishing, or tending to his vegetable and flower gardens. He could often be found "cleaning up the woods," chopping wood, or building a fire. For Emery, working with his hands was a true joy; to him, work was play. When he did take time to relax, he enjoyed a good glass of wine and the comfort of his pipe.
Along with his parents, Emery was predeceased by his siblings, Robert, Ronald, David, John, and Richard Howarth. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Mary Louise Howarth of Dover and Tom Howarth and his wife, Tiffany, of South Berwick; his stepchildren, Brian Lanouette and his wife, Bridget, of Devon, PA; Kevin Lanouette and his wife, Gina, of Windham, NH; and Derek Lanouette and his wife, Kim, of Lebanon. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister, Shirley Drouin and his grandchildren, Lucas, Jackson, Emma, Grace, Noah, Ruth, Rachel, Ryan, Amy, Mason, Sydney, and Trevor.
Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday, October 23, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main Street, South Berwick, ME. A graveside service will be held the following day, Friday, October 24, at 11:00 AM at New Town Cemetery in Rollinsford, NH.
