Agatha Bowden Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cope Memorial Chapel - Aztec on Jul. 16, 2025.
Agatha (Aggie) Teresa Bowden 93 passed away peacefully on Monday morning June 9th. 2025, while residing at Cranes Roost Care Home in Aztec NM, where they lovingly looked after and cared for her in her final year of life. Agatha was born in Gallup NM on a Sunday in 1931 to Jose and Rumalda Garcia. She was the eldest of 3 children and the last surviving sibling. She grew up in Farmington NM where her and her brother Jimmy and sister Marylou would play along the river, help her father and grandfather in the garden and get into mischief. There wasn't a person in Farmington Aggie didn't know or a relative of a relative. After graduating from Farmington High School Aggie went to Albuquerque NM to attend secretarial school. This prepared her for working with the State of NM in Shiprock and later in insurance in Farmington. In 1957 at a St. Patrick's party, she met Buddy Bowden. They married in 1958 and went on to welcome their first daughter Teresa (Horn). Years later they moved to Maracaibo Venezuela where Buddy worked offshore drilling. There they welcomed their second daughter Charlie (Romero). Aggie loved Venezuela and it only nurtured along her love for travel, experiencing new cultures and meeting new people. She was blessed to have visited 5 of our 7 continents in her lifetime. After returning home from Venezuela she started volunteering at San Juan Regional Medical Center as a Pink Lady. She later volunteered in the Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Dept. She loved to give back to her community whether it was through the hospital, during the elections or as a Eucharistic minister at her beloved Sacred Heart Parish, where she also attended school as a little girl. She was a devoted parishoner of Sacred Heart her entire life. Aggie loved fast cars, red jellybeans, a ribbon in her hair, Mexican food, dessert and Michael Jordan. She loved her family, and we loved her very much. Our mom was brave, courageous and smart. She had a true grit and was a fiery little Mexican lady. She will be missed but will forever in our hearts. Agatha is preceded in death by her beloved husband Buddy Bowden, stepdaughter Kathleen Fair, parents Jose and Rumalda Garcia, her brother James Garcia, sister-in-law Lily Garcia, sister Marylou Darby brother in law James Darby, nephew Joe Darby and her grandparents Andy and Victoria Romero. Agatha is survived by daughters Teresa (John) Horn, Charlie (Alex) Romero, grandchildren Tina Wood, Michael Anthony Romero great grandchildren Angelina Williams, Axanda Williams and great great grandson Sam Carter. Agatha and Buddy were blessed to experience 5 generations in their lifetime. Funeral and burial arrangements to be announced at a later date. Our family would like to thank everyone at Cranes Roost in Aztec NM for the love and care they showed our mother and family.

Aggie was a wonderful person. Full of sunshine and so very kind. I had the pleasure of working with her at SJRMC , where she was a volunteer for cardiopulmonary rehab. Condolences to her family.

Dear Aggie,
It´s hard to put into words what you meant to me and to so many people. I´m so grateful that you were a part of my life, especially when I was going through some tough times. You were so supportive with your thoughtful and kind words and advice. It was always a pleasure and comfort being around you. There was never anything superficial about you, Aggie. Never pretentious, always honest, sincere and straightforward, you kindly spoke your mind. I loved that about you. Thank you for the real person you were, for your great personality and for being such a supportive and wonderful friend. I am so fortunate and thankful for the privilege of having known you. It seems now, for way too short a time. I will never forget our friendship; how much fun it was to be in your company and the wonderful memories you left me. I will see you on the other side, my friend.

What a friend she was! Always there for whatever you needed, willing to share your happiness and sorrows, and never hesitating to share hers with you. It was a special friendship that endured for 54 years. I will forever miss hearing the sound of your voice, especially your laugh. God Speed Aggie.

One of my earliest memories of Aunt Aggie was when she was babysitting my brother Joe and me, and she served us strawberry jam for the first time. Joe wouldn´t touch it, but Ag talked me into trying some and I loved it. She was like that--always encouraging us to try new things.

When Aggie and I were in Mr. Huffman Spanish class at Farmington High in 1950, she got A grades, and I am still trying to learn a little Spanish. Her brother Jimmy and I graduated together in 1951. I knew Buddy from the gas field and always loved to hear her say "Buddy". There was always much love in her voice. Now they are together. Love to both.

Sending my loving thoughts to Aggie´s family. She was a good friend of my Mom´s, Georgie Monk, and I remember their animated conversations. A few years back, I gave Buddy a ride home from the post office when his old truck wouldn´t start. Aggie welcomed me as though I was a close friend they´d just seen the day before. It reminded me of how full of life and love she´d always been. Aggie left her mark, for sure, and it is a beautiful mark.

Ohhh my goodness Aggie...you have gone beyond us-give Kenny (my dad at GAB when you worked for him) a hug when you see him. I always told him I wanted to be able to type as fast as Aggie! I probably never made it but I taught typing at FHS in her memory. I loved you...as did my dad! Comfort to all your family...she was always loved!
