Agnes Elizabeth Bernath passed away on March 1st, 2025 after a short illness at Raleigh General Hospital in Beckley, WV. She was 89.
Agnes is preceded in death by her parents, Adam Bondzo and Stella (Withrow) Bondzo; her brothers, William, Adam, and Joe; her sisters, Margaret (Ernie) Mondron, Mary (John) Voloski, and Dorothy (Henry) Higginbotham; her much loved and missed husband, Don Bernath, with whom I'm sure are together again, traveling and dancing through the heavens above.
She leaves behind a son, George (Donny) Bernath, "the best daughter-in-law in the world" Angie; grandson, Zach, with wife, Cassandra; a granddaughter, Courtney; great-granddaughter, Aiden; a great-grandson, Oliver; many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Her "Thelma and Louise" adventures and times spent with her cousin, Skippy Boettcher, are legendary. "The two best in-laws anyone could have." Bud and Barbara Byrge.
Agnes previously worked for MGM studios in Detroit, MI distributing movies throughout the U.S. for MGM studios. She also worked many years as a telephone Operator for C&P telephone company in Oak Hill, WV and Beckley, WV before leaving work to raise her family.
She was a devout Catholic and member of Saints Peter and Paul, formerly in Scarbro, WV, and now in Oak Hill, WV. She had been born prematurely and her parents were told she was too small to attend school by herself. She and her younger sister Dorothy attended grades 1st through 8th at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School in Scarbro, WV, and attended Collins High School in Oak Hill, WV graduating together in 1955.
She was a great cook with many fondly remembering her Cabbage rolls and breakfasts of hot chocolate and pancakes. She was also a great seamstress who could sew and hem, cross stitch, and quilt. She used to make some of her own clothes in her younger years.
Agnes was known to be one of the kindest person and always thoughtful of people. A friend to all, who would talk and listen to others for hours. She also wasn't shy about calling you out if you were in the wrong and letting you know how it's supposed to be.
Near the end you were looking up and around while reaching up. We asked what you were doing and you responded "Can you see it? Everything is just so beautiful!!" As time grew near we told you that "we Love you, that everything would be okay, and to go dance with Don." Shortly thereafter you closed your eyes and left us all behind. If there ever was a doubt in heaven there is no doubt you are there now. Gathered together with all most cherished, who have passed before.
Services will be held at High Lawn Memorial Park on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM, with Dr. Father Jojan Joseph officiating. Entombment will follow in High Lawn Memorial Park.
Friends may call on the family 1 hour prior to the service at High Lawn Memorial Park.
