Obituary published on Legacy.com by Osborn Funeral Home - Shreveport on Apr. 17, 2025.
Almost one hundred and one years ago on May 22, 1924, Agnes was born at home on Adger Road in Gilliam, Louisiana. She was delivered by the elder Doctor T.B. Tooke. Welcoming her were her parents, Clyde Herndon Adger and Thomas Player Adger, and her two older brothers, Robert and James Adger. This new baby girl was lovingly accepted into a family that had endured the loss of their first daughter, Mary, in the 1919 Flu Epidemic. Agnes passed away on April 16, 2025.
She went on to grow into a beautiful young lady. Hunting and fishing with her father and riding horses were some of her most treasured memories. Agnes spent many fun hours with her favorite cousin, Johnette Adger, who lived just right down the road. Her brothers were also her constant companions, protectors, and teasers. As a young child, she went to Gilliam Grammar School and then on to graduate in 1940 from Belcher High School. After high school, she briefly attended Centenary College, where she earned an 'A' in freshman English. She then worked in the Engineering Department for Arkansas Fuel Oil Company, located in the Slattery Building in Shreveport, until the end of World War II.
Agnes met her future husband when her oldest brother suggested that she catch a ride into town every day with Forrest Conley because he had a car. Bob thought that she would be 'safe' with him. Little did her brother know that love would develop and grow into a marriage that lasted sixty-nine years.
After marrying in 1944, Forrest was almost immediately sent to New Jersey to complete his Army training before being sent to the Philippine Islands and then to Okinawa. At that point, Agnes moved back home to live with her parents until he came home at the end of the war. They had two sons born in Shreveport, Forrest M. Conley, Jr. and Thomas William Conley.
After moving to Beaumont and Houston, Texas, Forrest and Agnes decided to move home to Shreveport where they were long time members of Broadmoor Baptist Church. Agnes is survived by her two boys, Forrest and Tom, and her two daughters-in-law, Sherry and Debbie. She is also survived by four of the most dedicated grandchildren, Christine Conley (John) Baton Rouge, Megan Conley Fisher (James) Houston, William P. Conley (Erin) Wimberley, TX, and Rebecca Conley Dickey (Justin) San Marcos, TX. They have all visited her, written letters to her, called her, and loved her unceasingly. Great grandchildren have brought additional joy to her life. They are Robert Conley, Alexandra Fisher, Olivia Fisher, Hudson Fisher, Jax Fisher, Conley Jean Fisher, Eve Conley, Abram Conley, Forrest William Conley, Conner Dickey and Thomas Dickey. She was also cherished by all of the Mobile and Gilliam nieces and nephews who all took the time to drive to Shreveport to visit her many, many times.
Our sincere thanks to The Oaks of Louisiana and to the warm and loving caretakers that never failed to make her smile and help her in a hundred ways daily. We want to especially thank Sholanda, Latisha, Tammy, LaShonda, Joyce, Sylvia, Kayla, Le Le, and Gertie.
