AJ Mathy, age 14, of
Powell, Ohio, peacefully passed away on November 9, 2024 at Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, surrounded by his family. Born on July 21, 2010 to Jay and Teresa (Tysinger) Mathy, AJ was a loving and generous teenager with a tremendous heart who was deeply cherished by family and friends alike.
AJ was an esteemed member of the Olentangy Liberty Cross Country team, a member of the Buckeye Pole Vault Academy, and an active participant at Powell United Methodist Church. His passion for life was evident in everything he did from his enthusiasm for playing video games on the Nintendo Switch and engaging in virtual reality adventures with friends, to an innate talent for dance. Remarkably, Aj had a gift for dancing even without music, despite never having taken formal lessons. A devoted fan of Spiderman and a lover of comic art, AJ showcased exceptional artistic talent. He excelled in drawing, sculpting, and digital art, earning several awards at school. As a straight-A student, AJ had a particular fascination with science and art, which fueled his creativity and academic excellence. Nature held a special place in AJ's heart where joy was found in kayaking, camping, fishing, and creek walking.
This brave child possessed a courageous spirit and an extraordinary ability to prioritize the feelings of others, often using humor to uplift those around him. AJ was a strong advocate for human rights, believing in the power of kindness and dignity to elevate others. AJ was expressive, compassionate, witty beyond his years, and unrelentingly authentic to who he was. His free spirit and infectious positivity will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, youth group members, teammates, and everyone fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this remarkable soul.
AJ is preceded in death by his beloved grandmother Jane Mathy and grandfather Robert Mathy.
He is survived by his loving sisters Emma and Addison Mathy, and a cherished extended family including: grandmother Mary Tysinger, grandfather Larry Tysinger, a large network of aunts, uncles, and cousins too numerous to mention. AJ will also be deeply missed by his beloved cats, Mocha and Luna, who brought joy and companionship to his life.
