CORDELE – Al Penny, age 78, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2025 in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Veterans Section at Sunnyside Cemetery. The family will visit with friends on Friday, February 14, 2025 from 6-8 pm.
Al was born in Cordele, Ga. to the late Ray Leonard Penny and the late Noel Moore Penny Day. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Ray Penney and a great-granddaughter, Raelynn Craft. Al was a proud member of VFW Post 4742 since 2010; where he served as Commander, Quarter Master, Jr. Vice Commander, and Judge Advocate. He served in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam veteran. Al was retired but spent his working years at Bellsouth for over 30 years and the Postal Service for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen Griffin Penny of Cordele; his son, Brett Penny of Cordele; his daughter, Shannon Penny Nipper and her husband Timothy of Cordele; his brothers: Tony Penney and his wife Jackie of Dublin and John Penney and his wife Carlene of Vienna; a sister-in-law, Sharon Penney of Atlanta, brothers-in-law: Jody Griffin and his wife Belinda of Cordele and David Griffin and his wife Gina of Albany; his grandchildren: Shana Black, Elise Nipper and Kane Nipper; and his great-grandchildren: Nathan Nipper, Bo Black, Dawson Black, Chasen Craft, and Kash Nipper.
