Alan Winsor Obituary

Alan Bruce Winsor, 78, of Ridgefield, CT, passed away peacefully November 4th, surrounded by his family. Alan was born in Red Wing, Minnesota to Elaine and Mark Winsor. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from Hopkins High School in 1965, earned his degree from Carleton College in 1969, and went on to receive his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1973.
In 1979, Alan married his partner in crime, Susan, at the Explorers Club in Manhattan where they began a lifetime of adventures together. They settled in Ridgefield, Connecticut, in 1986, where they raised their family and built a life rooted in the community. Alan was an active supporter of youth sports, local theater, and the town's many beloved restaurants.
Alan began his career as a partner at the law firm, Haight Gardner, where he practiced from 1973 to 1984. He then joined International Shipping Company, Stolt Nielsen, for 27 years as SVP, General Counsel. Through every challenge – including representing his organization at the Supreme Court level, Alan's sharp mind, steady leadership, and ever-present date-stamped legal pads helped guide the company through calm and storm alike.
He was known for his remarkable memory, his attention to detail, and his unfailing good humor. Alan approached life with curiosity and joy, whether taking in a Broadway show, cheering on UConn Women's Basketball, viewing Animal House for the 300th time, or hosting legendary family holidays complete with good wine and fiercely competitive games of Trivial Pursuit. His Easter egg hunts for his grown children and grandchildren were the stuff of family legend.
In retirement, Alan embraced new routines filled with long walks, fine dining during NY Restaurant Week, naps with family pets, the endless planning of his next great trip and in his most recent years – his favorite role yet, Papa Al to his four grandchildren. He took great pride in keeping the birds (and squirrels) of Twin Ridge well fed through every winter.
Alan leaves behind his wife Susan of 47 years; his three children, Emily (Sean) of Redding, CT, Alex (Caitlin) of Wilton, CT, and Nick (Alison) of Newtown, CT; and four grandchildren, Hannah, Daisy, Colin, and Henry. He will be remembered for his warmth, wit, generosity and steadfast kindness.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday, November 16, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield, CT. Interment will take place privately. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Alan's memory can be made to A Contemporary Theatre (A.C.T) of Connecticut - 36 Old Quarry Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877 - https://www.actofct.org/support-us an organization he loved and supported.
